Those numbers do not sound right. I suspect that the 250 is total Cholesterol.

Call the doctors office and get a copy of the lab report.

There should be 4 numbers (for cholesterol, you might have had other blood work).

Total Cholesterol
HDL (high density lipids)
LDL (low density)
Triglycerides

And also ask if there are some older ones also. If this is a sudden change then you need to talk to the doctor about checking thyroid and other things that might have changes.

.and what are the best ways to diet and exercise.

For exercise the starting recommendation is for 30 minutes a day (can be done in 3 10 minute sessions) 5 times a week for aerobics. Brisk walking will do. But more intense exercise is better. There are all kinds of exercises that you can do; biking, swimming, jazercise, gym machines.

And you should do one or two session of strength exercise. There are a lot that you can do with things such as stretch bands and just body weight.

For a diet I think that the Mediterranean diet is a good basic diet. Use the Search box at the top of this page and you can find out more on both the diet and exercise.

But this is the basic of a good diet.

You want a moderate amount of fats (25-35% of calories), but limit the amount of saturated fats and not transfats. You can get good fats from things like fish, olive oil, nuts and avocados.

For protein - you want most of it from lean chicken, turkey, fish, soy, beans, low fat diary, and lean beef. You can have still have fatty beef and full fat cheese, just limit the amounts and frequency.

LOTS & LOTS of fruits and veggies.

And limit your consumption of refined carbs. That includes things like sugar (and things like sweet beverages) and white flour products. Try to eat more whole grain products.
