Lipitor vs Pravastatin?

Are there any studies or statistics in the difference between Lipitor and Pravastatin? What are the differences in side effects, etc.? the Doctors wants to prescribe both, together. Is this normal, and does it increase the side effects?

There is no medical professional that normally responds in their forum.

Here is a Consumer Report on statins.

http://www.consumerreports.org/health/resources/pdf/best-buy-drugs/StatinsUpdate-FINAL.pdf

Note that Lipitor is available as a generic, atorvastatin, and the price has dropped drastically from that shown in the report.

I have been doing some comparisons of atorvastatin and simisvastatin and it is not easy. There are few, if any, trails that directly compare the two. And looking at the detailed drug reports there is enough difference in the details that make it difficult.

But you can look at them here http://www.webmd.com/drugs/index-drugs.aspx

You might ask your pharmacist about how they compare.

the Doctors wants to prescribe both, together.

Do you have too different doctors and one want to prescribe one and the other doctor wants to prescribe the other?

I have never hear of two different statins being prescribed at the same time. And I would be very concerned about the increase in side effects.

You might want to ask in this forum. http://exchanges.webmd.com/heart-disease-exchange

There is a cardiologist that does answer some of the questions.
