New US Diet Guidelines: What Not to Eat
Instead of just giving Americans a list of healthy food choices, the federal government takes a stab at showing us what not to eat. Get the facts here.

I am 70 yrs.old. I have had high cholesterol that Dr. said is hereditary. I was put on Lipitor for 10 yrs. I am also on medication for osteoporosis. Lately I developed tingling/twitching feet that no one knows what caused it. I stopped both medications on my own. The twitching stopped but the tingling subsided but not go away. I tried experiment of going back to each drug alternately for a short time. Each time I had more tingling with both drugs, so now I stopped both again.
I am trying diet which I have been good anyway with eating lots of fibers, now I am eating more fruits, vegies, low on carb, no red meat, more fish and fish oil. My last check up my cholesterol was 260 down from 276 last time. One of my docs. mentioned Red Yeast but she said wait awhile for a few more months, they might come up with more investigation/acceptance. I am thinking I want to start now anyway before I start having a heart attack. Any one has any experience good or bad with Red Yeast please reply.-Thanks, Sandi

Sandi----- I have used the Red Rice Yeast to lower my cholesterol and haven't had any problems with it and it does work. Another one you can use is nician not the flush free. I have also used it and it works. You might consider checking with Whitaker Wellness Center. I have been there and they really helped me. I am 71 years old and don't think I would be alive today if it wasn't for Dr. Whitaker. He does everything the alternative way.

Also very interested in learning about the best and safest brands of RYR. Have had great success with it also, but want to be careful with something going into my body everyday. How can we tell if a product has contaminants. Thanks for any help you can give me...

Thanks everyone. Glad to know there are a lot of interest in this issue. I still can not decide what to do in term of adding more drugs to my routines. I have tried Niaspan and thought I have gone to " opposite of Heaven". I had flushing, bloating, itching and total feeling of uncontrollable nerve wreck. I even threw up at the doctor office. When I stopped using Niaspan, all symptoms stopped. Now I am very conscious of what drugs I am going to put in my mouth.
Marianne -appreciate your report of good result. Congratulations!
Lorri- As I said above, my body doesn't accept Niaspan. I am also allergic to ibuprofin. I have side effect to it.
Nancy-If I can lower my chol to 220's I will be ecstatic. Good luck with your lovastatin. Let me know if it works.
butterandcallie-glad to hear you have found the way to control. And yes I have tried not to have more stress than I can handle.
Abekan-If I find an answer I will e-mail you providing that I can find the way to get your e-mail first.
Letmesaveyou-Thanks for reply, if I decide to take RYR and if I am certain that you are not a saleperson, I will e-mail you.

Sandi, like many others who have commented I just want to applaud your love of life. You are an inspiration.

I have another food suggestion for you and others who want to manage their cholesterol with minimal or no medication. There are several foods that are enriched with plant sterols (proven to reduce cholesterol). These include some brands of orange juice, margarine, and gourmet wellness bars from Kardea Nutrition. These bars are very tasty and filling, and each one (150 calories) contains 1 gram of plant sterols, as well as 7 grams of fiber (5 soluble) and protein. Between-meal snacks is where a lot of people make bad choices. Choosing heart-healthy snacks can make a big difference. The bars are available at health food stores and http://Shop.KardeaNutrition.com . Best of luck and keep dnacing!

Dear deloman: Don't know how I skipped you. Thanks for reply. I have tried Niaspan but it did not work. Actually, I did not give it time due to reaction to it. I will do research on your DR. Whitaker. Thanks again-Sandi

I am a 65 year old female that is a user of Red Yeast Rice for the past year and it has definitely helped lower my cholesterol. I cannot take Lipitor or other statins as I get leg/muscle pains. My cholesterol dropped from 230 to 208 and I checked with my doctor and he advises to keep on taking it. I am thankful that I am not on any other kind of medication. Only other pills I take are Fish Oil, a multi-vitamin daily and a 1000mg Vitamin D every other day.

Dear Anon:
I'd like to know how we can find the RYR that is right for a person. I have heard that RYR in U.S. varies in strength and brand. How do we determine that strength or that brand is right for you?

Thanks, I will check out the bars but can't promise that I will buy it because I am not a snacking kind of person. It's good to know though.

I continued taking it and in January 2010 my LDL was 99 (163 overall) I take one 600 mg tablet with coQ10 - 30 mg everyday.

Dear lusiw:
Did you purchase your RYR from a vitamin outlet store or drugstore? Since FDA has not approved of it yet, it's difficult to trust any brand. I could also order it from the internet or even outside the country maybe India or China but I am afraid to do that.

I've not tried red yeast, but I have used niacin - 1500 mg per day. It not only lowered the bad, but raised the good.

Dear Sandi,

I have been taking Red Yeast Rice since 2004 and it reduced my cholesterol by 50 points. My cholesterol shot up after going through Menopause to 279. It was always 165 - 175 but that was history. I started taking Red Yeast Rice and it went down to 245. There are no side effects but you still have to have blood tests done just like with statins. Hopefully it will stay at 245 but I think that is low as it will go unless I take a statin, but I refuse because I have no Prescription plan and I can't afford the statins. Also, taking Omega 3 fish oil will keep the triglicerides down.
