Is Red Yeast good for you?

I am 70 yrs.old. I have had high cholesterol that Dr. said is hereditary. I was put on Lipitor for 10 yrs. I am also on medication for osteoporosis. Lately I developed tingling/twitching feet that no one knows what caused it. I stopped both medications on my own. The twitching stopped but the tingling subsided but not go away. I tried experiment of going back to each drug alternately for a short time. Each time I had more tingling with both drugs, so now I stopped both again.
I am trying diet which I have been good anyway with eating lots of fibers, now I am eating more fruits, vegies, low on carb, no red meat, more fish and fish oil. My last check up my cholesterol was 260 down from 276 last time. One of my docs. mentioned Red Yeast but she said wait awhile for a few more months, they might come up with more investigation/acceptance. I am thinking I want to start now anyway before I start having a heart attack. Any one has any experience good or bad with Red Yeast please reply.-Thanks, Sandi

Sandi,

Primary source of vitamin D comes from the sun during mid day when the suns rays are high in the sky. Your shadow should be no longer than half your height for optimal vitamin D production.

Sunlight shines on the skin layers on a cholesterol component called 7-dehydrocholesterol. From this, the production of vitamin D begins.

As we age, The skin becomes less efficient in producing vitamin D. We also tend to spend more time indoors than when we were kids.

Dietary sources of vitamin D come primarily from animal sources. The fatty high cholesterol foods is where Vitamin D is found since Vitamin D requires fats to be absorbed properly and do its job.

I know this sounds crazy, but its human physiology. Low fat and low cholesterol diets, along with avoidance of mid day sun, using sun block, suburban lifestyles lived indoors and behind the tinted glass of an SUV are all contributors to the low vitamin D crisis America is now facing.

Maintaining adequate Vitamin D levels is important for avoiding osteoporosis. And we all need cholesterol to make vitamin D.

Yes, my Dr. checked my vitamin D level and it is O.K. but because of my osteoporosis she prescribed Vitamin
D 5000 mg. every other week but I developed constipation so we stretch it into a monthly program. And yes we go outdoor every day either to walk on the beach, go to the gym or go to my painting classes or just go out to lunch, to the movies,etc. I always wear my hat though because I don't want to develop skin cancer. It's become very difficult as to what to do. Do I want skin cancer or negative Vitamin D?
I guess Panchita gets the sun every day and never thought about skin cancer or anything else.-Sandi

Sandi, you are probably right about Panchita getting sun everyday and not even thinking about skin cancer. However she is dark skinned and not a likely candidate for skin cancer.

I think its a matter of balance. My understanding is a sunburn is where the risk for skin cancer comes from, while sun avoidance is where the risk for vitamin D deficiency comes from.

Must be nice to live near a beach. I dream about visiting Destin Florida and making some vitamin D on those pristine white sugar sand beaches.

Bobby, correction on vitamin D I am getting. The bottle says Vitamin D 50,000 units capsule.
We live in Clearwater, FL and our condo is near the beach but not on it, about 3/4 mile away. Destin is up north but it's as beautiful and probably as sunny as Clearwater.
At the Senior center where we go dancing, there is a centenarian gentleman who just turned 100 and his dancing lady is 85. They dance almost every dance until way into the night until the band plays "Good Night Sweetheart". I know only that his name is Roger and about a couple of months ago, there was a group of filmmakers from a European country, coming to film him at the dance. I learned that they followed him around for a week to observe his lifestyle.
I am not sure whether the American researchers' group has met him or not. He is a preppy young at heart man who has won a championship in lawn bowling. Still walking and dancing well and very friendly. I wanted to talk to him more but he doesn't come to our dancing center too often.

Sandi, 50,000 units! Yikes! That might have something to do with why you had trouble taking it. 2,000 units per day would be more even dosing. Better yet is getting the vitamin D from the sun because its the vitamin D your own body produces.

Thanks for sharing about the centenarian gentleman who still dances. Thats awesome!

The tingling and twitching are indeed indications of nerve damage. The best approach is to eat foods high in omega-3 to assist your nerves and to maintain adequate levels of B vitamins. B vitamins are essential for nerve health, and the omega-3's will help you control your cholesterol levels as well. You have to take between 1000 mg and 3000mg daily for appreciable effects.

The kinds of foods that will help your nerves also help a condition called shingles , which is caused when a virus attacks the nerves, so I recommend eating these as well.

Cholesterol itself is vital to nerve health. Cholesterol helps form the sheath that protects nerves. Think of it as insulation on wires.

There are so many vitamin B, as far as I know, there are B-6. B-12 and what not. My intake of vitamin B is only 100mg that come in the multiple vitamin tablets. I am taking Omega-3 1000mg daily. I can feel the tingling more when I go to bed and can tolerate it if I don't take statin or osteoporosis drugs. Otherwise these drugs will make me feel the tingling keep going up like something crawling up to my knees. That's the reason I stop taking them.

I quit taking Crestor although it gave me the least pain of the 3 statin drugs I took. I can now kneel down again. In fact I can kneel down on my cement garage floor which is damp and have no pain. When on the statins I would be in pain for days after kneeling on the floor!
Now I take a multi B vitamin and fish oil and my BP medicine in the morning. Red Yeast Rice in the evening with a fiber pill and oat bran. I was told by a friend that the RYR works better if taken in the evening and I've been doing it since my friend claimed that it works. I'm now able to walk2 miles in the mall mornings when the weather isn't nice. And outside when it's nice out. I go for my blood work soon and I'll let you know the results. I know I feel wonderful now. Also if you smoke quit.
Smoke also elevates cholesterol..

Hi Tim,
Let me know after you have the blood work result. I am interested to know if RYR works. No I don't smoke nor drink. I try to watch my diet such as no butter or cream, no red meat only chicken and fish, etc. Use only canola oil. I don't use olive oil because my husband hates its odor and I cook for two people so I just skip it.

Hi painperdu, could you please supply me with the name of the Red Yeast Rice that you recommended? I have been struggling with high cholesterol for a number of years but refuse to take statin drugs. My father died from heart disease. I try to eat healthy and take daily supplements including fish oil and coQ10 which I heard is great for heart disease. Did a cholesterol test and discovered my numbers were a total of 250. My doc. cut out the fried foods etc that I am eating. I told him I do not eat anything fried, no red meats, turkey and chicken or fish only. Would appreciate the info. Thanks.

Hi to all those that follow this tread.
I am just starting RYR a week ago because all my tests are still not getting better. In sheer desparation, my primary doc mentioned RYR so I bought a bottle. I started to take two 600 mgs. a day as recommended on the bottle. I started to have restless sleep so I reduced it down to one tablet a day. It maybe just coincidental.
When I did not take any meds. (statin and osteo med) except supplements, I fall asleep easily for 7-8 hrs each night and I feel happy and content during the days. If not for the threat of high chols. creeping up in every 3 mos. test, I would be content and sleeping well every day.
Will post when I go in to get my blood test in a few mounts. Hope the reading comes out better.

Hey, Caspo-- I was involved in a study 3 years ago, run by a Dr. David Becker, a cardiologist in the Philadelphia area. You can Google him and find out all about it and his efforts to get people to lower their cholesterol levels through surprise!: diet and exercise. It works, by the way. At the end of the study, several of us were advised to try RYR in combination with Omega-3 fish oil, me included. I suppose that experience has taught him that when the study ends, people are less faithful to the diet and the exercise. To me, as long as you had good progress with your diet and lifestyle changes, go ahead with that!
As bobby75703 mentioned, as red yeast is a natural statin, it will have all its side effects and worsen your condition. Go on with what you started, add more exercise and try some stress-relieving strategies, and hopefully you will get your cholesterol numbers down. Good luck and congrats!

Hi all,
I had just came back from seeing my doc. to read my blood test. Surprise! and a nice one at that. My cholesterol reading is 244 down from 260 last time. HDL is 99 higher than 90 last checkup. LDL is 115 down from 134 and within the ref range. I am so happy. This is from taking RYR only one tablet 600 mg twice a day.
I will continue this regimen for three more months and see what will happen to my tingling feet. Right now I don't feel any difference. They are still tingling but not getting better or worse. Wish me luck.
