I am 70 yrs.old. I have had high cholesterol that Dr. said is hereditary. I was put on Lipitor for 10 yrs. I am also on medication for osteoporosis. Lately I developed tingling/twitching feet that no one knows what caused it. I stopped both medications on my own. The twitching stopped but the tingling subsided but not go away. I tried experiment of going back to each drug alternately for a short time. Each time I had more tingling with both drugs, so now I stopped both again.
I am trying diet which I have been good anyway with eating lots of fibers, now I am eating more fruits, vegies, low on carb, no red meat, more fish and fish oil. My last check up my cholesterol was 260 down from 276 last time. One of my docs. mentioned Red Yeast but she said wait awhile for a few more months, they might come up with more investigation/acceptance. I am thinking I want to start now anyway before I start having a heart attack. Any one has any experience good or bad with Red Yeast please reply.-Thanks, Sandi

YES! Take Red Yeast Rice Extract, along with Pantethine! I lowered my total cholesterol from 338 (hereditary) down to 218 in less than 3 months by taking these supplements, while doing no other thing such as better eating or exercise.

I too wanted to try Red Yeast Rice- instead of a statin. My doc didn't have a problem with it as she said that the cholesterol medicine was made from Red Yeast Rice. Shortly after being on the Red Yeast Rice- I developed extremely terrible stabbing pain in my hips and thighs. The pain was like being stabbed with a knife. It was basically impossible to climb any stairs as the pain increased. So- I stopped taking the Red Yeast Rice. Very slowly the pain went away. It took a month for all the pain to leave. The doc said that she would have to be careful not to give me any statins that were too high in dose- so that it wouldn't happen again- as statins were made from the Red Yeast Rice. I noticed that she added other meds to my statin that also had the side effect of muscle pain. So- I'm now quitting all of them- and want to study lifestyle changes for myself. That's why I'm on here.

I recently read that the FDA has banned the red rice yeast from over the counter cholesterol lowering items like Cholestoff.

One has to be very careful to be sure what you want is what you get with OTC supplements.

Just turned 52 and need to reduce cholesterol which is at 274...will not take prescription drugs. My research is leading me to RRY 600 2xdaily supplemented w/CoQ10. I take a multi vitamin from GNC (for women over 50) supplemented with fish oil daily. Just looking for some input on combining RYR and CoQ10 (to replenish what RYR depletes). I have taken all natural vitamins every day since I'm 19 and am a true believer in natural remedies...any thoughts!

bobby75703 replied to DebbieCarroll's response:
While Red Yeast Rice is from a natural source, its still a statin.

Red Yeast Rice was the original statin marketed as a the drug Lovastatin ( Mevacore)

RYR is a fungus that blocks the production of cholesterol, CoQ10, and other products from the mevalonate metabolic pathway.

While not as powerful as some of the synthetic statins, RYR is not risk free because its natural. People have been injured by it.

I have the tingling on the bottom of my feet. To stop it, I take a vitamin B6 every day, and 1500mg B12 (sublingual only)every day. If I feel it starting again during the day, I take a couple more of the B12 (sublingual only). It is maddening to have that, try those B vitamins, it is the only thing that stops it. It used to wake me up in the middle of the night.

sandichot replied to Jakkiwms's response:
Jakkiwms- How long do you have to be on both B6 and B12 to feel the benefit? I took some B12 once and didn't like it because it gives me stiff neck which is very odd. I stopped it on my own. It was a prescription drug a podiatrist gave me. I didn't go back to her.

I actually reduced my cholesterol by eating a clove of garlic every day. (Just swallowed the whole part with water.)

I have also seen that while I was on the Adkins Diet (Low Carb/High Protein) that my Cholesterol drastically went down.

I posted about the Adkins Diet on another thread but have not seen where anyone has had any thoughts on that.

I have used Red Yeast Rice now for the past three years and have success lowering my cholesterol. Have not had any side affects and continue to use the product. My wife is also using Red Yeast Rice and receiving good cholesterol numbers. We would rather use the Red Yeast Rice over other statin drugs.

I have tried Red Yeast and after one week my muscles were telling me no no! Upon reading the label I found a form of statin in the ingredients. I stopped immediately. A friend had the same experience. I am now taking a prescription called Welchol, 625 mg twice a day. I am scheduled for a blood test to check my cholesterol.

There is a nonflush niacin supplement avaiable under the Wegman's name if you're lucky enough to have a Wegman's food store near you.

BillH99 replied to nnname03's response:
Non flushing niacin has a different composition than nicotinic acid.

And the nicotinic acid is the only form of niacin that has an effect on cholesterol and triglycerides.
