I am 70 yrs.old. I have had high cholesterol that Dr. said is hereditary. I was put on Lipitor for 10 yrs. I am also on medication for osteoporosis. Lately I developed tingling/twitching feet that no one knows what caused it. I stopped both medications on my own. The twitching stopped but the tingling subsided but not go away. I tried experiment of going back to each drug alternately for a short time. Each time I had more tingling with both drugs, so now I stopped both again.
I am trying diet which I have been good anyway with eating lots of fibers, now I am eating more fruits, vegies, low on carb, no red meat, more fish and fish oil. My last check up my cholesterol was 260 down from 276 last time. One of my docs. mentioned Red Yeast but she said wait awhile for a few more months, they might come up with more investigation/acceptance. I am thinking I want to start now anyway before I start having a heart attack. Any one has any experience good or bad with Red Yeast please reply.-Thanks, Sandi

I'm 56 yrs of age, have been on crestor for 4yrs. Numbers dropping from high 260's too around 200. LDL is the problem leading me to believe it is hereditary. Taking 40mg (max) no side effects but doctor wants it lower, diet, exercise all playing a part. Just had a colonospony, stopping medication on my own, using red yeast rice, CoQ10 , fish oil . Have been on approx. 3wks starting to experience tingling in feet. Maybe a side effect until body adjust ? Will stay in touch.

Red Rice Yeast is from what statins where originally developed.

They can have the same advantage and side effects of statins.

The problem is that they are unregulated and the amount of active ingredients very drastically from brand to brand.

I could not tolerate any statins even though it did lower my cholesterol readings. Developed periperal neuropathy, muscle weakness in my legs, and lack of balance when walking. Doctor agreed I coul stop the statins for six months and then try Red Yeast Rice but she felt I would have the same problems and she was right. After just three days on 2 capsules of Red Yeast Rice a day, the leg weakness, discomfort in my feet and tingling came back again. I am stopping the Red Yeast Rice.

I am almost 62 female this coming April, I stop using Lipitor due to my loss of selective memory, so I switch to Crestor with a lot of water but ask your doctor first. I used to have night legs cramp, but by drinking at least a few sip of water it stops. I also drink a glass of 8 ounces water with two teaspoon of apple cider vinegar before brushing my teeth and go to bed, it helps lowering my cholesterol, blood pressure and diabetes. My cholesterol drops from 190 down to 158. But using RED Yeast is my question. Help......

I was advised to soak 4 tablespoons of instant oats to 50ml of plain warm water overnight and take it the first thing the next morning to treat my cholesterol problem..after taking in the morning,i soak again the same amont of oats for taking before bed. After 1 week my cholesterol level was back to normal,by the way,i refuse to take medication becos of all the side effects..avoid oily foods is also a trick to lower cholesterol and take lots of fruits and veggie daily.

The herbal or all natural alternative is a great way to reduce weight. And any kind of medicine is safe only when taken as prescribed.

I have been taking Red Yeast Rice for about 6 years.. no side effects.. although,, initially it brought down my numbers..I also lost about 20 lbs during that same time.. Now.. having gained the 20 lbs back still on the supplement.. I have risen from 236 to 301.. So, I dont know what to say to you except.. if your in good health.. the only thing Id do, is get a basline Liver blood test.. so you know if it begins to effect your liver.. thats the only thing my Dr was concerned about and it never had any effect on it at all-- Im in my 40's.

Is Red Yeast Rice Good for You?

Anything that induces a deficiency of the mevalonate pathway cannot possibly be good for you.

What brand of RRY do you NOT recommend. What DO you recommend. How many tablets a day do you take? Do you take Niacin also?

Hello Friends,

Since red yeast rice products can no longer contain lovastatin, it's unclear whether red yeast products currently on the market would have any effect on cholesterol levels. Red yeast rice is a substance made by fermenting a type of red yeast called Monascus purpureus over rice. Red yeast rice has been used in China as a preservative, spice, and food coloring. It's used to give Peking duck its characteristic red color and can also be an ingredient in fish sauce, fish paste, and rice wine. Red yeast rice is used in traditional Chinese medicine as a remedy for poor circulation, indigestion, and diarrhea.

Thanks and Regards

I have the same request for Painperdu: which brand of RYR do you use that has been effective? I weaned myself off Pravastatin 40 mg due to memory loss/confusion issues it caused. My doctor said it was due to the statin drug but provided no other alternative so I began researching this on my own. Hope you somehow get this message. Thanks!
