Health Insurance for Older Children

I would like to share a short story about Bryan. Bryan was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in the 8th grade. According to his mother, a year or so later, he was diagnosed with Crohn's disease. Thankfully, he's got the drugs he needed and he's made it through high school. The real challenge is what happens while he's in college and the years after that. We all know the struggles of getting insurance with a pre-existing condition.

I'm interested in hearing from parents of children with a chronic condition. What issues have you faced when seeking health care for them? As a mother and a grandmother, I know how difficult it can be at times — financially and emotionally — to meet a child's needs.

Beginning September 23, young people will be allowed under federal law to remain on their parent's health insurance plan up to age 26. Of course, this change is not automatic. So a good place to go to learn more is the Kaiser Family Foundation, a nonprofit organization that produces a wealth of materials. Here's the link to their two-page information sheet about extending coverage to young people: http://www.kff.org/healthreform/upload/8065.pdf

To all the parents in this forum, my best wishes go out to you.
