In Need of Emergency Care

THE NATIONAL HEALTH COUNCIL

A number of people on this forum have posted about going to the emergency room. It can be a frightful experience. I know because I just went through that with Michael, my significant other, when he experienced a stroke. In addition, there's the possibility of a financial shock if you learn that the ER you used is outside your health insurance provider's network.

On Sept. 23, under new federal law, health plans and insurers will not be able to charge higher copayments for emergency services that are obtained outside of a plan's network. This change will mean a lot if you become seriously ill while traveling or don't live near a hospital that is a member of the insurance company's network of providers. To know how this change in the law will affect you, contact your insurance company.

You might want to contact a patient organization that represents your particular chronic condition -- http://www.nationalhealthcouncil.org/pages/member-roster.php. Many of them have websites with useful patient resources. For example the Epilepsy Foundation provides information on what to do in case of an emergency: http://epilepsyfoundation.org/living/.
