EXPERIENCE WITH PODIATRISTS?

hello, all --

i have a disgusting toenail fungus, and it has been suggested that i go to a podiatrist to have the affected toenails removed, the theory being that when the new nails grow in, they won't have the fungus.

does anyone --

(1) know how accurate this info is, or

(2) have any experience with podiatrists?

thanks for any responses!

Howdy SusieMargaret! How nice to be able to give you a little information since you are always so supportive to others. This article on Fungal Nail Infections mentions nothing about removing the toe nail.

I looked a little further and I found Fungal Nail Treatment . It says "Treatment for a fungal nail infection includes using medicines, taking steps to prevent the infection from returning, and possibly removing the affected nail."

Hopefully once your podiatrist has examined your nail(s), he or she will be able to recommend some treatment options. I have been to a podiatrist once for an insert for my shoes (back/balance issues), and he was extremely helpful and his staff very polite. I wouldn't hesitate to return if it were needed.

Let us know how it goes,

hello, tiff --

of course i don't mind hearing from you! thanks for the warning about the liver damage.

it turns out that i can't take oral meds for this fungus because of interactions with my antidepressants, so i am currently using this nail-polish type stuff on my toenails every night. this is supposed to cure me if i do it every night for a year! plus the materials say that only 12% of people get completely cured even with this stuff. so i'm pretty discouraged.

i haven't made an apptmt with a podiatrist yet, because i read that having the toenails removed is not used very much as a treatment. i'm about at the stage when i say, oh, the heck with it, and just leave it alone. the only problems with that are that i can't get any more pedicures (and i love them) and it's contagious.

i suppose that as ailments go, a toenail fungus is pretty minor, but it is a major annoyance!

hello again, tiff --

i forgot to say that this nail-polish type stuff is prescription and costs $88!

can you believe it? thank goodness i have insurance, and if i'd known how much it cost in the first place, i don't think i would have even gotten it!

Sorry to nudge my way into this conversation, but $88? Yikes! I sure hope "a little goes a long way" and that bottle lasts for quite a while.

Best wishes to you, Susie Margaret!

Nail fungus can be treated with some meds over the counter. You nail may not grow back and if it does it takes about 6months or longer. And the fungus could return. My daughter was in the Navy and because of the boots she wore she lost the nail on her big toe and it never grew back and that was 9 years ago. I would not have it removed/

hello, M --

i gave up on the nail-polish-type stuff. the prospect of waiting a year for any progress, and only a 12% chance of it working, was just too overwhelming. i'm just going without pedicures!

thanks for your reply.
