Liver problems with high AST, ALT

An_241366 posted:
Hello,

I am a 25 year old Male 5"5 about 165lbs. In March of 2011 I had blood work done and my tests came back with no issues other than a high Bili at 1.4mg/dL. My blood work at the time showed my AST & ALT levels were at 21 U/L.

I have been having a little pain on my sides for a while now maybe 9 months or so. I have also had times in the past where my eyes turn green naturally yellow and skin turns yellowish. I mentioned this to my doctor and she had some blood work done to test liver and kidneys yesterday. My results came back today and my AST was at 311 U/L (average range 15-37) and my ALT 142 U/L (average range 0-40). My Bili total was 1.2 mg/dL.

This has me very concerned and my doctor said that I need to stop drinking and take another test in 3 weeks to see if the levels go down. I have been drinking anywhere from 1-4 nights a week and drink between 6-15 shots when I drink. Usually tequila or other shots. I have also used drugs in the past like ecstasy, cocaine & marijuana.

While my levels are through the roof I have recently started to weight lift and take different supplements and weight loss products. I am wondering if the huge spike in my AST & ALT is linked to those supplements and pills I have been taken.

How can I go from 21 AST & ALT to 311 AST and 142 ALT in 6 months. I guess the fast that they were normal 6 months ago makes me feel better but I am obviously very concerned about this.

I took a test for all the hepatitis's today and those should be back by Monday. I will have to stop drinking and taking everything for 3 weeks and test the ALT and AST levels again and see where they are at.

Does anyone have any experience with this or any ideas or tips on whats going on or what to do. Any response would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Hello An_241366 and welcome.

You did a smart thing in going to see your doctor and get checked. I hope you choose to follow her recommendations and you get good results on your hepatitis and follow-up tests.

I'm going to run through some of the things you've mentioned and their possible effects on the liver:

Steroid Abuse (not sure if these are in your weight lifting supplements or not): "Liver disease and possibly liver cancer. The chance of these problems is higher when steroids are taken as a pill."

FDA Warning Body Building Products with Steroids : "Acute liver injury is known to be a possible harmful effect of using anabolic steroid-containing products."

Binge Drinking : "Annie Britton of University College London says in an accompanying editorial that binge drinking doesn't just increase the risk of heart disease but that it's also linked to such dire health problems as cirrhosis of the liver and several types of cancer."

Hepatitis A, B & C Slideshow : (Hopefully your tests will come back negative)

Have you considered talking to your doctor about Drug Abuse ? Since you mention binge drinking, cocaine, ecstacy, marijuana, and possibly weight-lifting supplements and/or medications, those are things that may show a pattern that should be discussed with a professional.

Please let us know how you're doing and I hope you get good results,

Hello,

Thank you for your response. I got my Hept tests back and they all came back negative for Hep A, B & C so that was great to hear.

I have never taken any steroids of any kind before. The work out stuff I was taking was Hydroxicut Hardcore, Jacked 3d and Isagenix which is a meal replacement shake & pills.

As far as the drugs that is all in the past and behind me now. I do not plan on using again and when I did use it was never a day to day thing. It was more like once a week while going out.

I have defiantly done my fair share of binge drinking, I have not drank for over a week now and my liver actually seems to be feeling worse. It is defiantly enlarged and does cause me some discomfort.

I am hoping that stopping drinking will help and be a fix for these issues that I am having. This is a huge wake up call and I am taking this very seriously.

My doctor said that we could get an ultrasound done but I dont know if that is going to show us anything that we dont alraedy know as far as my liver being inlarged. I dont have insurance right now so I am paying for everything out of pocket and my bill is already close to $2,000 with nothing figured out yet.

I guess time will tell...

Great news about your hepatitis tests all being negative! I can tell you're taking this all seriously, but sorry it's been so expensive.

Hopefully you'll continue to get good news and your numbers will keep improving. If you have a chance to keep us updated, we'd like to hear how you're doing.
