My daughter has been experiencing unexplained bruising that remains for months. She has gone to her doctor and to an unfectious disease specialist and they have run numerous test and all the tests are normal. What type of dr. should she see next because we need to find out what is causing this bruising..

hello, D --

i am so sorry that your daughter is suffering from this unexplained bruising. may i ask, how old is she?

she may want to take a look at the webMD info on bruises, starting at http://firstaid.webmd.com/tc/bruises-and-blood-spots-under-the-skin-topic-overview . she should be sure to check out all of the sections, which are listed at the left in blue ink under the green title "bruises and blood spots under the skin."

there are several blood disorders that are accompanied or signaled by bruises that have no apparent explanation; a hematologist (see PS) is the kind of specialist that your daughter would want to see.

i want to raise one other potential cause, and i sincerely hope that you won't take offense. is there a possibility that someone is hitting your daughter and that she is afraid to tell you about it? has she suffered any broken bones for which her explanation doesn't really make sense? does she "fall" a lot?

i know this is a very sensitive issue and that many people who have been physically abused are embarrassed, ashamed, or afraid to say so, but there are resources available to her if this is the case; she doesn't have to endure such torture in silence. can you find a way to ask her gently about this?

i send caring thoughts to both you and her, and i hope you will keep us posted on how the both of you are doing.

PS -- if your daughter's primary-care dr cannot refer her to a hematologist, any large hospital will have one. she can also find one thru the website of the american society of hematology, which is the professional association for hematologists, http://store.hematology.org/Default.aspx?tabid=231 (don't fill in the boxes for name or company unless you are looking for a particular hematologist). after you click "search," the list comes up beneath the form with the boxes.

Thanks Susie..

She is 23 years old and the bruising is not consistent with being hit. Someof them are small dime size bruises. I don't think any of them are large bruises. I thought a hemotologists would be the kind of dr. she needs to see next, but I wasn't sure. The infectious disese dr. said he couldn't find anything medicaly wrong with her.

hello, D --

have her see a hematologist and go from there. i hope you and she can get some more info that way. you might also suggest that she be given tests for vitamin deficiencies.
