About to start Clomid.....then Ovidrel...then IUI.

Hi,

Here's our story: we have a girl that turned 5 earlier this year but have not been able to get pregnant after trying for the past two years. We recently went through a round of tests and everything checked out fine i.e. hormone levels, egg counts, sperm count & mobility and that test where they pump dye thru you to confirm the tubes are open. We have no idea what the issue is, however we are now about to use all three: Clomid, Ovidrel (trigger shot) then IUI.

I've been reading a few of these discussions and it looks like while everyone is using Clomid, only some are also using Ovidrel (trigger shot) and/or IUI. I'm wondering if people have just opted out of using Ovidrel and IUI because their doctor said it wasn't necessary or is it more likely a financial decision?

I am doing the same thing as you are, but with Femara instead of the Clomid. I got a coupon from my doctor for 30 free pills of Femara ($600 value).I ordered my Ovidrel from Freedom Fertility Pharmacy (based in Massachusetts) and it was around $100 including next day delivery. My insurance doesn't cover any fertility meds. My IUI was around $500 out of pocket costs. My doctor told me that adding an IUI adds maybe 5% to the success rate, which might not seem like much, but may be enough to get us pregnant.

There are certain reasons to use Ovidrel (or other trigger shot). If you are going ahead with an IUI, then this is the reason you've been put on Ovidrel. The timing is very important for the IUI to have the success rate that it does.
That being said, for some it might be financial. For some it may be that their doctor does not feel that they will need to take that step.
As with fertility issues, each reason for opting out/ having necessary procedures are entirely unique to each couple. For instance, I'm doing the Clomid/Ovidrel/IUI after a 4 month hiatus because the doctor feels it will give me the best chance at getting pregnant more quickly. Not that we couldn't
go at it" on our own for a few months, but as I was recently diagnosed with endometriosis, the quicker we move on resolving the infertility, the less likely the chance that I have to repeat the surgery to remove the endometriosis.

I hope that helps!

Hi,

Well the plan my Dr. had for me was Clomid, Ovidrel and IUI (my 1st round) . My Dr. messed up my cycle this month , so we were only able to do the Clomid. They said an IUI is like an added bonus for me. No bonus this month:( We are just hoping the Clomid worked.

I am going to a new Dr. on Friday now and if my AF comes this month then will go back to doing round 2 of Clomid, Ovidrel and IUI.

Lots of baby dust:)

Hi-

I am on my second round or clomid, ovidrel and then IUI. In the beginning I used just clomid until my husband was told that his sperm count and mobility was a little low. After getting a minor sirgery, we went back to the doctor and because of these factors, the doctor found it more beneficial that we use all three together to increase our possibilities.

I am 100% healthy and do ovulate on my own when not taking ovidrel. The Ovidrel is for timing. I am on 50mg of Clomid 2x a day (5-9) which I paid $15 for at my pharmacy and the ovidrel is $90. Thank God that my insurance covers the IUI process. I just pay the copay.

Do not feel alone. Good Luck all and keep the faith!
