Anyone with follicles under 1 mm on first clomid cycle but success later?

I am on my first round of clomid. I never ovulated after going off of birth control pills and blood tests confirmed annovulation. I took 50 mg of clomid on days 5-9. I went in for my day 12 ultrasound and I had numerous follicles but they were all under 1mm. Has anyone else experienced such small follicles? I'd had an ultrasound previously before even starting clomid and I had a lot of small follicles at that time. They tested my testosterone levels to see if I had PCOS and potentially needed metaforin. My testosterone levels were normal so they did not prescribe metaforin. I'm hoping my follicles were so smal simply because my dosgae was low but I'm also worried I could be clomid resistant. Has anyone else had follicles under 1 mm their first round with success later? I'm pretty bummed. I really thought clomid was going to help me ovulate.

Yes when I first started clomid i had many follicles but they were all too small. Then the next round they bumped me up to 100mg, and that made them the perfect size, and then I got pregnant! So just hold on, it might take a couple rounds.

The doctors always start low and work their way up to a higher dose due to the danger of over stimulating your ovaries. Don't worry if the first cycle is a bust. It may take several rounds to find the dose that works for you. If you're Clomid resistant there are other options, too. I only sporadically ovulated on Clomid at 150mg. However, I consistently ovulated on Letrozole/Femara and ended up with my first ever BFP. Unfortunately, we miscarried, but we did get pregnant. I start my first round of Letrozole tomorrow after about a year and a half off from TTC.

Thanks ladies. I actually ended up going to an RE. They did an ultrasound and blood work the day of my first appointment and believe I had a late response to the clomid and ovulated at day 31. I glad to be working with the specialist now.

31? Wow! So, if this cycle doesn't work, I assume they will increase your dose? A RE is definitely the way to go. I love my RE. He put me at ease from the very first visit.

The RE diagnosed me with PCOS. He gave me a 5% change of pregnancy with ovulation induction and timed intercourse alone so I'm doing IUI and clomid this cycle. Wish me luck!

maragayle replied to melissasmithdobrovolski's response:
Good luck! I have PCOS as well. My RE seems to think the letrozole/timed intercourse should be enough for us, but we'll move on to IUI in a few months if that doesn't work. I got pregnant once before with this treatment plan, so we're keeping our fingers crossed. I got my peak on the OPK on Monday, so I can test on the 14th.

That stinks:(

My intended first round of IUI was cancelled because I have zero follicle growth from the 100 mg of clomid after US and BW on CD12 and 16. My LH is elevated so I had to start birth control pills last night:(

Bummer! Are they going to increase the dose next time around? If Clomid doesn't work, check out Femara/Letrozole. It's proven to work in cases where Clomid fails. I respond better and more consistently to it.

Spotting has stopped. No AF. I called the RE and received a cryptic voicemail from the nurse stating spotting doesn't count and to call with my first day of a heavy flow. I'll test again in a few days if AF doesn't show her lovely face. This is how my pregnancy started last time around...BFN, spotting, then BFP. I miscarried a few days later.

I don't think they're going to do clomid again next round. My RE talked to me for a while on Tuesday when I was in for my ultrasound. Later that day after my blood work came back the nurse called and told me I'd had a "dysfunctional" cycle and that we needed to schedule a time to come back in and talk to the RE. My from what he chatted with me about on Tuesday I feel like he is going to try and encourage us toward IVF. He explained it is such a thin line between someone with PCOS not responding at all and being over stimulated. I don't want another failed cycle but we're not ready for IVF yet. Perhaps it is my fault he brought this up because I told him I want to take a more aggressive approach and do something that will work (I'm 33).

I hope that you are pregnant and that this one sticks. Don't you hate those cryptic voicemails from the nurse? Haah. Keep me updated!

I was told up to 150mg of Clomid is considered safe. I have PCOS, too. Have you asked about letrozole? There was an article in the NY Times this week regarding its successes and how it's considered a miracle drug in PCOS related infertility treatments. It's definitely made a difference in my cycles.

AF showed today with a vengeance...lots of cramping and back aches. Looks like round two of meds will begin Monday.

Yeah, my RE also said just because you don't respond to clomid one cycle does not mean you won't respond to the same dosage in a different cycle. He seems to think I'll respond better right after the pack of birth control pills. I may mention letrozole at my appointment next week. I'm just so impatient.

Sorry about AF arriving. At least it's the start to a brand new cycle. What meds are you doing for your next cycle?

Your RE seems like the opposite of mine. If a dose didn't work he would up it the next round. I only tried a certain dosage a couple months if I ovulated. I didn't ovulate on Clomid until 150mg, then only sporadically. He started me on 7.5mg of letrozole right away since it's the equivalent of 150mg of Clomid.

Same treatment plan this cycle...7.5mg of letrozole CD 3-5. I start testing with OPKs tomorrow morning. I ovulated last month, so we're trying it again. We're both young, so I'm still trying to avoid intrusive treatments. If 6 or so cycles of this doesn't work, we'll add IUI. I'm lucky that I have a $20k lifetime limit for infertility treatments through my insurance, so we have to do 6 cycles of IUI before doing IVF if we want insurance to help.
