Cloth Diaper Covers

Hi everyone!
I'm hoping that some pro-cloth diaperers will join this group! I am pregnant and due to have my first baby any day now. I want to try to use cloth diapers with her and am still trying to learn all the ins and outs of them. I feel like a pro with disposables because I worked in childcare for years.

I have some questions for those of you who have been doing this for a little while:
1. What your favorite type of diaper covers/ all-in-ones are and why.
2. Where have you found is the best place to order from
3. Do you prefer prefolds and covers or all-in-ones and why.
4. Any other tips you've discovered?

I have 2 kids already but have never cloth-diapered, so I am interested to hear responses too! If we go the cloth route, I am pretty sure that we'll use a one-size all-in-one. The all-in-ones seem so much easier and will help me get DH on board with the idea, and I'd definitely get a one-size-fits-all to keep costs down. I was at a baby fair a couple of weeks ago and saw these at www.totwraps.com that I'm leaning toward right now. Fortunately I still have lots of time to decide!

I'm a basic girl. Love prefolds with a Thristies cover. I love the simplicity of it. No stuffing. No long drying times. Quick and convenient. Most times I use a Snappi with them.

2. Where have you found is the best place to order from. I usually order from Nicki's Diapers.

3. Do you prefer prefolds and covers or all-in-ones and why.

See my answer for #1. I also have some Bum Genius 3.0s but I'm not a fan of them. First of all, I hate stuffing them. And second, the microfiber insert is notirious for having stink issues.

4. Any other tips you've discovered? There is SO much information out there about CDing. It can be very overwhelming. Just take a leap and jump in blindly. But don't commit yourself too quickly. Start off with a variety of things before you figure out what you like best.

Thanks for the reply!
You said you use a snappi--are those the plastic things you can use instead of safety pins to hold the cloth prefold together?

Also, if you don't mind me asking, how many prefolds do you have? Do you get different sized ones to use, depending on age, or have you always just used a standard size?

Yep. They look scary and complicated but after a few tries, they're pretty easy to use. Even my husband can use them, lol! It never fails --- when I don't use them, DD will have a poop and the poop then gets all over the cover.

I started out with 24 infant size and then DD began to soak through them at around 13 months so I bought 24 premium size. As for covers, I have 8 in each size. At one point I had 2 kids in cloth diapers and this was plenty to get us through a couple of days.

The Gerber prefolds you can get, would you consider those an infant size, or premium?
I do have a few safety pins, but I need to look into buying some snappis. I wish they would make them easier to get your hands on! I hope Target or Walmart will start to sell more cloth diaper supplies in-store soon! I hate having to pay shipping to get everything sent to me from online.

I have stuck with the pockets. I just started CDing about a month ago and so far I like it. I wish I would have started sooner. My favorite are the Fuzzibunz perfect size. They seems to fit LO the best and have the slimmest fit. I also have some bum genius 3.0 and gro baby. The pockets dry fairly quick because you take them apart to wash them and then stuff them before you use them. I don't really mind the stuffing part. I just stuff them all at one time, so the diapers are ready for me.

From my experience, the Gerber prefolds are not as absorbant as an Indian or Chinese prefold. I would say they are a step below infant size. I only use them as a doubler when I'm desperate, lol!

Nicki's diapers usually has free shipping on orders over $75.

oh, okay. Thanks for the tip. I'll have to look into getting some Indian or Chinese prefolds.

Hi! I'm so glad to find this board! I have been CD'ing my 20 mo old since she was 5 mo old and I love it! Here's bit of what I like (which is different for everyone!)

I love PF's. Very basic and cheap. I have them from www.little-lions.com These are my favorites. You can buy 2nd for cheap and I have no idea why they are cheap. I prefer unbleached indians. I don't like white diapers! I also use a snappi instead of pins.

My favorite covers are Thirsties. Wonderful and great price!

I don't care for all-in-ones unless you can remove the soaker or insert. But then that really makes it an all-in-two or pocket! True all-in-ones where the soaker is sewn in take FOREVER and a DAY to dry. No joke. Plus most have micofiber inside and this can get stinky. I've not had issues (I use microfiber i my pockets) but ALOT of people have big issues with MF.

My favorite pockets are Thirsties Duo Diapers (love them!) and Fuzzi Bunz One Size. You will find that every diaper fits each kid differently so what fits my DD perfectly might not work for your LO.

One Size dipes are great but most ppl will say they don't really fit until 3-4 mo old.

I wash my CD's every 3 days in Tide original powder. I do a presoak in cold water to get the leftover poo and urine out. Then a hot wash with 1/4 c tide and then a cold wash cyce with no detergent to make sure it has all rinsed out.

Forgot to add....www.diaperpin.com is a great resource. Plus if you get on their forums there is a section for sales and CD companies annouce their sales and discounts there. That is where I get my diapers. I wait until someone is having a sale!

1) I use Mother Ease. They're so awesome! Also they have their own forum where you can buy used ones from other mommies. I find that they're less expensive then other brands like Bum Genius ect but they seriously don't leak and if they do it's tota; user error.

2) I bought them off another mommy on Craigslist and bought 20 AIO 15 Toddler size diapers and 10 training pants for potty training. Including fleece liners, inserts (I use them even though they're not pockets. Just for more absorbancy) and 100 double stiched fleece wipes for $100! You can check out their own website at www.motherease.com

3) I use AIO's with a Mother ease Airflow cover. Their airflows are amazing. They let air in and protect any moisture from getting out. I didn't want to use snaps for do any folding. I work F/T and wanted something more convenient. I line dry my diapers to expand the life iont eh diaper and save on my energy bill. So, I highly suggest if you get an AIO get enough in your rotation to allow dry time (they take longer on the line since thheir thinker).

4) My tip is if you decide to CD get a toilet sprayer! I found a DIY online and my husband built me one for $12. It will make your life sooooooo much easier.

Thanks for the tips! I love this!! I hope they keep coming!! I'm at work now and can't get on any other sites (WebMD is one of the only sites not blocked, I have no idea why, but I'm glad!), but plan on checking those out when I get home!
