I have had a cold for a week and a half now. It is not going away. I keep thinking that it is just allergies but i am not sure. My fever keeps going up and then down. When should i see a doctor? I have tried OTC stuff and cough drops but it is not working. I am even having a hard time breathing. What should I do?

Rod Moser, PA, PhD responded:
If you are having breathing difficulties, you most definitely need to see a medical provider. Having a hands-on examination is really the only way that you can be properly diagnosed and treated.

Allergies do not cause fever. Although allergies can always play a contributing role in some people with upper abd/or respiratory symptoms, you most likely have a prolonged cold and possibily, a secondary bacterial infection.
