I have had a severe sore throat and running on/off fever for 2 weeks now it is red, swollen, with yellow blisters. my glands are extreamly swollen so bad it hurts for me to turn my neck and it makes my ears hurt. It hurts way too bad to eat I havent eaten no more then 2 spoons of icecream a day since i got sick. I have been to my local ER 2 times and had 2 antibiotic shots and I am on antibiotics.ER said there is nothing more they can do its just sterp throat. Could it be something else should i get 2nd opinion? Does strep really last this long. Please help I am in so much pain. Thanks

I can't really blindly diagnose you, Nicole since I cannot examine you, but unless you were specifically tested for Strep prior to getting those "antibiotic shots", there is very good chance that you never did have Strep. Your description is certainly not classic for Strep.

I would suggest that you get an EBV titer -- an accurate test for mono (mononucleosis).

Thank you. I also have another question if you dont mind. If a person is showing no symptoms of mono could they still have the virus and pass it to someone else? How are other ways other than sharing saliva can you get mono?

Rod Moser, PA, PhD replied to nicolejude862012's response:
Mono can cause infections of various degrees...from a mild cold-like illness to one that puts you down and out for a month or more. Mono is infectious and transmitted from person to person, but it does not have to be just from kissing. Many people who contract mono have no idea of the source. Saliva has the potential of contaminating objects from a sneeze, hand, water fountains, etc.

You are welcome....please keep in mind that sometimes those blister-like areas on the throat are not blisters at all, but more likely to be lymph tissue (often termed as "cobblestoning". These are more common in viral illnesses, NOT Strep.
