Hello, I am new to this community but I have to admit I am impressed by the exchange of valuable information that I found in here. That being said, I have a problem of my own, with one of my tonsils. Yesterday morning, I woke up 7AM totally normal, and about 11AM my right tonsil started to feel a bit sore. nothing to worry about. by 6PM it was swollen and very sore, and it kept being like that trough last night and today's morning. I can't say I'm having problems swallowing but I can't say I'm having a great time either. one thing is for sure. I don't think I got a cold, flu, etc since I don't cough, I'm not sneezing, I don't have a runny nose, not even headaches, maybe feeling a little tired but that may be because of my work which eats a lot of my time. I didn't drink anything too cold, haven't sat out in the cold for too long, etc. it was just my normal everyday routine, only with a swollen tonsil as a bonus. The thing is, today it is Sunday so it's hard to find a doctor, I could go to the hospital's emergency department, but I'm not sure that they would consider this as a real emergency. The even worse thing is that tomorrow morning I have a really important presentation to attend to at work and making it to the doctor early on is next to impossible. Last night, I started on amoxicillin 500 just to be sure this doesn't get any worst. I am not a doctor, but this is the closest I have to a treatment right now. My question for you would be - is this really as serious that I should cancel everything at work for?

I have no idea, based solely on your posting, if your problem is serious or not. Since I do not know anything about you, your medical history, or have any way of examining you, it cannot make these blind decisions....I am sorry.

One-sided tonsillar swelling and pain has the potential of being serious, namely a peritonsillar abscess. These can start out with mild symptoms, and then quickly become worse. It is not a good idea to self-prescribe some old antibiotics when you don't have an accurate diagnosis. As a matter of fact, taking an antibiotic BEFORE having a throat culture or rapid Strep test will alter the resutls.

Weekends are always challenging when it comes to medical care, but if you want to be properly examined, diagnosed, and treated, this may be your only option. An urgent care facility is less-expensive than a hosptial ER.
