Hi Doc,

I had an Tympanoplasty 1 week back and from day of the operation i have a very loud beep in my ear which is really unbearable . i searched on internet and found that its called Tinnitus.

i checked with my doctor and he says that probably inner ear might have got problem due to surgery, i was dumb on hearing this.
he said that he will give medicine which will increase the blood flow to my inner ear , below is the name of the tablet prescribed for this problem:
ESFOLIN PLUS prescribed for 3 months

whatever is it iam really tensed as whether this sound will ever go ?
I know that the graft will take time and the medicine which is applied will take time to dissolve. But after all if this sound doesn't go then i would not be able to hear properly .
Its like standing near a loud beeping instrument .

Surgery procedure written in my papers--
Left Tympanoplasty with mastoidectony done under general ansesthesia.

Please provide your suggestions doctor.

Rod Moser, PA, PhD responded:
What country are you in? Esfolin Plus is not a product that I am familiar with in the treatmetn of tinnitus.

A tympanoplasty and mastoidectomy does not affect the INNER ear, just the MIDDLE EAR. I am not clear if an inner ear disorder was the result of your surgery, nor can I blindly predict any specific outcome (prognosis) for you....I just do not have the medical details of your case in order to do that.

Rod Moser, PA, PhD replied to pankajvg's response:
Millions of people have tinnitus, and unfortunately, there can be hundreds of different causes. I don't know the DETAILS of your surgery....only your surgeon knows the technique that he used, and the underlying reasons why you needed this surgery in the first place. It would not really be helpful even if you provided everything about your case, since I still would have no way of examining you first hand, or treat you -- not the purpose of this educational community.

We do not use Esfloin Plus in the U.S., and I was having considerable difficulty finding the ingredients. Basically, I don't use it and I am not sure why it was prescribed for you. While there are many homeopathic treatments that claim that it will "cure" tinnitus but studies are few or non-existent regarding effacacy.

I don't know what caused YOUR tinnitus, so consequently it would be difficult for me to even comment on how to treat YOUR tinnitus. You need to rely on the recommendations of your medical provider and hope that it will abate over time.

Tinnitus IS bearable. I know, I have had tinnitus for over a decade now. Please read what you can about tinnitus, on this community board, other areas of WebMD, and other medical sites. The reason why I say "medical sites" is because of the plethora of tinnitus quackery out there in cyber-land.
