hello i have a sore throat for almost 4 weeks now,i had a throat culture that came positive for staph aureus and it can be cured only with cefolexin and amikacin.my doctor didn't prescribed any antibiotic and he said staph is part of everyone flora,he said me i have problems with acid reflux and gave sth for that, actually i dont feel my stomach well but i dont think i have a sore throat from an acid reflux.i also fell my muscles in the fornt and around my stomach swollen,,,
so my question is: is staph a MRSA ? and its normal not to be cured ?

Rod Moser, PA, PhD responded:
No...Staph is not necessarily MRSA, but MRSA is a type of Staph. I am sure if you had MRSA, your doctor would have told you. Yes, Staph aureus is a common bacteria that can be cultured from everyone....and usually on every skin surface. The fact that it grew on your throat culture does not necessarily mean it is the cause of your sore throat.

Yes, acid reflux can cause a sore throat, but so can many, many other things. You have had a sore throat for four weeks now....this is not normal, so if you are no convinced about your doctor's assessment, I would suggest that you get a second opinion; perhaps one from an ENT specialist.
