Throat Swollen..?

About a week ago I had an infection in my nose. It caused my left side of my nose to swell up, get really red, and painful to even touch. It just went away maybe 3 days ago. Now, the left side of my throat is swollen, the lymph node is huge. My ear hurts with it as well. I have a doctors appointment later on today just trying find out what I should expect. I don't think it's just a sore throat. Nothing I take has helped. It's actually even woken me up.

You should expect a good examination. This is really the ONLY way to find a medical explanation for your symptoms. I suspect that antibiotics may be in your future....or a blood test....but I have long given up predicting what a doctor might do in any given situation. I only know what I would do, and unfortunately, I am not the one who will be caring for you.

Let me know what your doctor found...his diagnosis...and what he did to help you. If you have any questions, I will be here to help you....

I actually tried to reply to those earlier with an update but couldn't find it. lol

Anyway. I went to the doctor yesterday. They decided to test for: Strep, Mono, and Staph. All came back negative. The doctor told me that it looks like an Abscess. So they gave me a steroid shot and a prescription of 875mg Amoxicillin with instructions to take 2 daily for 10 days. I suppose that sounds about right. But don't Abscesses usually need to be drained? I also with she would have given me something for the pain. But nope.

Not all abscesses require drainage...some are already doing that at the time of your exam. You may have a type of infection called a furunculosis. Your treatment is appropriate.

I think your doctor should have offered you something for pain, too. You need to ask, so give their office a call and leave a message as to what pharmacy you prefer. Are you using any warm compresses?

Hmm. Well i'm considering going to the hospital soon. I've been up for almost 24 hours and haven't been able to sleep. It seems to be hurting more and my throat feels like it's tightening.

Warm compresses? No. I've been gargling warm salt water. About it though.

Rod Moser, PA, PhD replied to MKuhl09's response:
Is the abscess in your nose or throat? Your original posting mentioned the nose, so I am a bit confused as to where your problem is now. I suggested warm compresses assuming your nose was the issue. If you have a throat abscess, this can be a more serious issue...like a paratonsillar abscess. These typically need drained, so if you are not improving, or actually worse, I agree with going back to the hospital for a re-examination.

My apologies for not being more specific.

About 2 weeks ago my nose got really swollen and painful. That had never happened before. Most of the redness was on the left side, more than likely due to a bump being on that nostril on the inside. That went away and then about 3 days later this started. Throat being swollen, but mostly/only on the left side. Which is very interesting considering that's the same side as the nose problem.

When I first went to the doctor on Thursday they gave me 875mg Amoxicillin and a steroid shot. That's it. I did in fact end up going to the hospital yesterday, because the prescription I was given was doing nothing for me at all. The doctor did say that it was an abscess but a small one and that it probably won't need to be drained. Which brings me to wonder what a "Big" abscess looks like. :O.

He changed my prescription almost immdiately. I'm now on 500mg of Azithromycin for 3 days. They also gave me another shot in the butt...I'm not sure what it was, it's name started with an "R". Roflin? something like that.

I've been able to eat. Which is a better. However, my main concern is getting my mouth open to eat. Unless it's a very very small piece of food, it hurts a lot to open my mouth. I actually haven't been able to look at the abscess since before I went to the hospital because it hurts too much to try and open my mouth that wide.

Rod Moser, PA, PhD replied to MKuhl09's response:
The shot was Rocephin. Your doctor is trying to treat this so-called abscess by firing a series of antibiotics at it, so I certainly hope it works. I do not have a clue as to why you cannot open your mouth, but it does concern me. Since I am unable to examine you first-hand, I cannot really get a firm handle on your case, or confirm or dispute the accuracy of your diagnosis, or even know if your treatment is appropriate. As much as I would like to help you, I am really at a loss without this very important hands-on data.

You will need to work closely with the physician who is treating you, or see an ENT (or another ENT) for a second opinion.
