Oral Cancer? Tongue Cancer?
goolar posted:
I am 24, female. I have been dealing with 2 lumps on the left side of my throat. I went to the ER and told me is was a cold sore around January/February...months passed and the lumps stopped aching. I let it go but still told my doctor. She sent me to my dentist and she had no idea. due to my TMJ problem they thought it might be my cringing. They sent me to an Oral Surgeon he said it looks like a bite trauma. I went to 2 of them this year and nothing.

I noticed my mouth gets numb, my throat (left side) won't stop aching since last month, so I decided to make an appointment with my ENT.. Sept 18th ugh! I am very anxious. I have dealt so much with my health and cancer scares left and right.

My mouth would burn, my lumps ache, my throat is insanely painful and NO ONE knows why. my ears have been so painful, mainly the left (I have chronic ear pain due to my TMJ) but it is so bad as the time progesses. my doctor gave me antibiotics. if that doesnt work she thinks i have a viral infection.again.

I get sores here and there. I had lymph nodes before but no one knew the reason. i still have to behind the neck that never left so the oncologist thought nothing of them "not impresses" as she said. since docs thought I had lymphoma.

I have GERD/Acid reflux also.
I eat veggies, dieting, working out. I have done what every doctor, specialist has told me and I don't feel better now this.

I will post pictures of my tongue if anyone wants to see

Thank you, opinions are so very needed.
Rod Moser, PA, PhD responded:
Don't bother posting is not likely that a diagnosis will be made from photo. At your age, oral or throat cancer is very, very rare. Unless you are a chain smoker with a terrible family history, cancer would not be high on anyone's diagnostic consideration list, but if your ENT was suspicious or your suspicion drove him in this direction, the only defintive way to rule out this rare possibility would be with an MRI followed by biopsies of any hard lump..

I cannot protect you from your fears, but I can say that worrying has never solved anything. There are probably logical explanation for your symptoms. For instance, TMJ can cause ear pain (because of the nerve pathways). Herpes simplex (cold sores) can cause lymph node responses, even long after you have had an active lesion, and....depending on the location of those lymph nodes, this can cause ear pain.

So....relax. Wait until you see the ENT. Hopefully, the ENT will do a careful examination, diagnostic tests, and spend the time necessary to find some answers.
goolar replied to Rod Moser, PA, PhD's response:
Thank You for your reply and words. I have never smoked in my life. I hope this time my new ENT listens to me. Like you, I hope they take the time to get at least an answer. No one has really let me speak when they are asking whats wrong with me (doctor wise). To be completely honest I have never been sexually active so my doctor ruled out herpes instantly. She told me to see my GI once more as well. I guess I shall calm down, I have been strong about my health for 2 years and still no diagnosis. I guess thats a good thing? I am still alive.

I will keep taking these antibiotics and hope for the best. Thanks again Dr. Moser.
Rod Moser, PA, PhD replied to goolar's response:
Herpes simplex of the mouth or lips is usually not sexually all. Most children get them from being kissed by their parents. Millions of people in the U.S. have herpes simplex....also known as fever blisters and colds sores. The word "herpes" implies sexual transmission, but for this type, it is usually not the case.

The chance of you having throat and/or oral cancer at your age and with your non-smoking history is next to nil. Your ENT may roll his eyes when you ask about cancer, but don't let him get away with dismissing your concerns. Insist on a careful exam and a thorough explanation....this is the very least that you deserve. He may not feel that an MRI or biopsy is necessary at all, so please trust his professional judgment.

Let me know what, go about your day and stop worrying so much.
goolar replied to Rod Moser, PA, PhD's response:
I did some research on it. I don't have a fever. The lumps in the front side are steady and not painful to the touch. Does it last for a very long time? herpes simplex? the left side of my throat is sure killing me! aah! I am relaxing, doing yoga...trying to keep my mind off the pains in my mouth. I may just let the ENT do what he wants to do. Maybe...just maybe I will mention oral cancer and as you said he will roll his eye, probably laugh.

I will trust him. I will let you know what happens. Antibiotics aren't working. My doctor told me to call her tomorrow for valtrex? I will try and see until Sept. 18 (the ENT appointment) Thanks for keeping an eye on me.

Take care and have a great week Rod Moser. once more, thank you.
Rod Moser, PA, PhD replied to goolar's response:
Valtrex is for herpes simplex...and ONLY herpes simplex, so perhaps your doctor is thinking it is worth trying. And, you don't have to have a fever....

You could be completely better by the time you see the ENT if this is herpes simplex. Valtex doesn't cure herpes, but it does cause it to go into remission.
goolar replied to Rod Moser, PA, PhD's response:
I've been to another ENT and Oral surgeon. It's been months and still no answer.

my tongue is painful
here are a few images if anyone can help?

the lumps/bumps (whatever they are) are SORE, burn and painfulllllll!!

please help

Rod Moser, PA, PhD replied to goolar's response:
They appear to be cysts, but without the ability to feel them, or biopsy one of them, this is only a guess.
goolar replied to Rod Moser, PA, PhD's response:
If so, what I can do about them? What can I tell these specialist to try (suggest) and help? I'm really tired. I don't know if it's due to Acid Reflux/Gerd due to small lumps at the end of my tongue which aren't painful as the ones on my side. They get numb, painful when I eat certain foods. I was even given a splint but no help.
Rod Moser, PA, PhD replied to goolar's response:
There is nothing YOU can do about them. Only your ENT can specifically address this concern for you. You can tell the ENT your concerns, but you cannot force him to do anything if he does not feel these lumps require any medical or surgical intervention. I know you are frustrated, but as you may know, there is not much that I can do from this end of the Internet. It is really between you and your ENT.
bonbonpro replied to goolar's response:
did you find out what they were I have them too
bonbonpro replied to goolar's response:
what did your ENT say? he told me I was clenching at night so it is leaving impressions. I also went to see a natural path and asaid it is because it is swollen, if you look on the internet for swelling it shows that there is some viral issue going on
