my grandson, age 9 and very thin for his age, got his flu shot yesterday. today there is about a 2 inch in diameter red patch and it is very swollen. he says its very painful. is this normal?

Any person can get an inflammatory response from a vaccine. Although I cannot see this patch first hand, another possibility would be a localized infection (cellulitis). It would be best to call his medical provider so that this can be properly examined.

In the meantime, a cold compress may help as well as some ibuprofen.
