Rod Moser, PA, PhD responded:
Over the counter medications only control SYMPTOMS, but they do not help the underlying cause of the cough. If you do have an infection, you will need to see your medical provider so that you can be properly examined, diagnosed, and treated.

There are over-the-counter medicines that can loosen a cough control a cough, loosen a nose ,dry up a nose, etc. I don't know if you smoke or not, but hopefully, you do not. I am sorry, but since I do not know your goal in seeking an over-the-counter medication, I don't know what to recommend.
