TInnitus problems

I was recently diagnosed with tinnitus a few weeks ago after being exposed to load noise (woodworking) for long period of time which I wore earplugs the whole time. I went to an ENT and he did a hearing test which was ok and wanted me to have a MRI to rule out a tumor. He suggested that I wear earplugs when around loud noise. So the next day I did some sanding in my shop and wore earmuffs and earplugs and that night my tinnitus was worse for the next two days. I cancelled my MRI because I was afraid that it might aggravate my tinnitus. Now it goes from loud and annoying to a somewhat tolerable state but never goes away completely. Now for the last week or so I cannot sleep lying down because I wake up and my tinnitus is screaming. The only way I find comfort is to sleep in a recliner on a slight angle and on my left side. I am wondering why this is? Could there be something else going on? Would the MRI show anything? I am flying to Germany in a couple of weeks and I am worried about the flight aggravating my tinnitus. Any suggestion on flying?

Rod Moser, PA, PhD responded:
There can be HUNDREDS of causes of tinnitus. Assuming your tinnitus was caused by an acoustic event, the MRI is only used to rule out other possibilities, like the tumor (acoustic neuroma) that your doctor may have mentioned.

Tinnitus is totally unpredictable. There are medications that can make it easier for you to cope with noises, but no medicines that will automatically "cure" it. I have no idea if the flight or barometric pressure will aggravate your symptoms....I am sorry. Since tinnitus can originate in the inner ear or even the brain, air travel is usually not an issue.

Thanks for the reply,
What do you think about tinnitus getting worse when I lay down and better if I sleep setting up and on my left side?

This could indicate an INNER EAR source...
