Red Hot Ear While sleeping
evidently posted:
My right ear becomes very painful when I am sleeping on it. It turns very red and hot and wakes me up with the pain. This has been going on for over 2 years. What is causing this? I have been to an ENT and they couldn't tell me anything about it.
I even developed a white growth on it and went to a dermatologist. They biopsed it and said it was a calcium deposit from ear trauma.
Rod Moser, PA, PhD responded:
Red, hot ears are interesting phenomena that many people experience. For some unknown reason, warm, oxygen-rich blood is being shunted to your outer ear. This is a variation of simple blushing. Sometimes, people can even experience pain when this happens"026not just embarrassment.

If the problem is severe, there are only a few medical options to treat it. Some ENTs use beta-blockers (drugs that are traditionally used to treat high blood pressure and other cardiac problems). Sometimes beta-blockers will help"026sometimes they don't. Since you have had this for two years, this may be something you will want to try.
