Acoustic Neuroma

Hello Dr. Moser,

My mother is 82 years old and was just diagnosed with a small acoustic neuroma. She had a CT scan and an MRI. The doctor said it was small, I think it was 1 centimeter. Everything I have read about it is exactly what the doctor said. At her age he advised against surgery. He wants her to have a consultation with a neurosurgeon. The doctor also discussed the Gamma Knife, but at her age I don't think so. He says she should have annual MRI's to check it's size. She has vertigo and some hearing loss, but the doctor really couldn't say if the vertigo is from this or not because hearing loss and vertigo are common in the elderly. I just wanted to get your opinion on this, and do you think seeing the neurosurgeon is important. We are in Queens NY, and he wants her to go to NYU Medical Center, he says this neurosurgeon is the best in the country.

Thank you for your time, Suzanne L.
