Abdominal Pains for CC patients

This post is addressed to Hope Uronis, but anyone with similar issues please respond.

I am a Stage4 CC patient doing Chemo. I am having significant dull ache type pain and quite sharp pains after/during eating. There are significant noisy bowel sounds immediately after eating that sounds like "stuff" is moving back and forth which I assume is the food working its way through the small intestines. The sharp pains are tied to the movements/sounds. My doctor has given me prescriptions for hydrocodone 10mg/325mg acetamin. to help control pain.

I had surgery about 7 months ago to resect the transverse colon, and my chemo cocktail is... (Oxapilatin, 5FU, Avastin).

Anyone else have post surgery ongoing abdominal pains?

Hi CancerBattle2726,

I first would like to say congratulations on your battle. You should be very proud for all that you have accomplished with your surgery and the fight.

It does look like your abdominal pain could be side effects of the Oxaliplatin IV and Avastin IV or even your surgery. Here are links to the side effects of these two medications, so you have them on hand:

Oxaliplatin IV Side Effects:

Avastin IV Side Effects:

Have you talked to your doctor about these pains? Maybe he/she has some advice that can help. Please keep us updated and stay positive because you are doing an amazing job!
Best Wishes! Amelia

I had similar sromach issues when i was going through chemo/radiation. My radiatin oncologist found a study that showed probiotics helped greatly in many people. I started taking a product called Culturelle and it turned my stomach isues around 180 degrees. I still watched what I ate, but the pains were significantly reduced. After my rectal surgery, I started to get the pains again. And again I have strated taking the probiotic. It is also helping in this case. My oncologist said he had read about this study some place other than in his Oncology related medical journals. All I know is that it has saved me an immense amount of pain. Do not understand all that it does, other than keeping your system "regular", but it did work for me.

Hope this helps

Hi. The symptoms that you describe are not at all uncommon, both in patients who have had surgery and in patients who have had surgery/are on chemotherapy. Things I think about in my patients include 1) adhesions (scar tissue) related to healing after the surgery, 2) changes in digestion related to the fact that part of your colon has been removed, 3) symptoms related solely to chemotherapy (mostly the xeloda). Are the symptoms worse when you are taking Xeloda OR just after the oxaliplatin? Are they related to certain foods? These are the things that I would consider and bring to the attention of your oncologist so that he/she might have a few clues. - Hope
