Post-Op Complications for colon resection

WorryingWife1 posted:
My husband is 21 days post-op from a colon resection to repair a colon perf caused by a supposed-to-be routine colonoscopy. He was doing well and ready to return to work. Now he is in tremendous pain. Swollen on left side. Can barely walk without pain meds.

We went back to the surgeon who ordered 2 repeat CTs, CBC and CMP. The CT showed some free air left from surgery but nothing "abnormal" according to the radiologist reading the CT. Labs showed WBC was elevated but not now. Sugar slightly elevated. Sodium low but corrected w/ IV fluids in overnight hospitalization. Bowel sounds are active; passing gas but last BM was 4 days ago. He was discharged from hospital to wait and see because they don't know what else to do.

We are scheduled for another CT tomorrow so they can compare any changes. Meanwhile it is not getting better and he needs to take Vicaden just to function. What should we do? Follow surgeon's wait-and-see with another CT? Get a 2nd opinion? If we get a 2nd opinion, where do we go: another surgeon, back to the GI doctor who did the colonoscopy, to another GI specialist, internist?

Any medical opinions/advice would be appreciated.

Hi WorryingWife,

How are things going? Unfortunately, we no longer have an expert in this community at this time. I hope that his doctor was able to give more advice as to taking the next steps. Please keep us posted. Your husband is in my prayers.
Best Wishes! Amelia

Amelia,
Thank you for your kind reply. Unfortunately, we are still seeking answers. He has improved slightly but remains very tender on one side, almost 6 weeks post-op. He had another CT which reported possible pneumonia or infection, which we know after getting our own copy of the radiologist's report. However, the surgeon tells us everything was normal with the CT and just to wait it out. Waiting for the GI doc, who is out of town, to weigh in since he ordered the repeat CT after telling us this is not normal.

Very frustrating and concerning.
