cpap frustration

I was diagnosed about 2 years ago with sleep apnea. My doctor tells me the only solution is to use a cpap. I absolutely hate it. I wore it every night faithfully for the first year. I was sleeping less than I did without it. My sleep was restless and I woke numerous times. The mask was not comfortable and I couldn't get a good fit. I tried many different styles of masks, all to no avail. I finally gave up and just quit wearing it.
I felt much better without the cpap, but felt guilty. I happened to have a physical with my family physician and he asked if I was wearing the cpap the pulmonologist ordered. I confessed I wasn't. He layed the guilt trip on me so I dug it back out and have been wearing it again, with the same uncomfortable results.
I originally used a full face mask but that was not working. It left sores on my face down the sides of my nose. I am now using the nose mask. It leaves my upper lip feeling bruised. If I loosen the fit, it leaks air. I am a mouth breather so I have to wear a chin strap in addition to the mask to keep my mouth closed. I also sleep on my stomach which doesn't help. My pillow is always knocking my mask out of position. I have tried sleeping on my back, but can't.
Last night I had to do the oxsymeter on my finger so my doctor will have results for next week's appointment. It was a horrible night. Now I was getting tangled in 2 lines. I was awake more than I was asleep! How can doctors really have accurate information on how a person sleeps when the person is not sleeping naturally? In this day and age, there has got to be a better solution. When I told my doctor that I couldn't wear the cpap, his reply was simply, "You have to."
I wonder if there is any other solution to sleep anea than being hooked up to a machine every night. I have talked to some people that absolutely love their cpap, but I am certainly not one of them. I need to find another solution or I'll die from the effects of lack of sleep!
Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Go to www.nomask.com . I have been using it for 4 years and love it. I had all the same problems you described and this solved it for me. Good luck.

MLHGS : You are not alone, believe me. I have been using my machine for 2 yrs & have had the same issues. I have found that the Swift FX works for me in the mask dept., not sure if you have tried that. Had my machine adjusted about 35-40 times & can handle the pressure but still no more than 2-4 hrs of sleep with that thing. Keep me posted if you find what works for you & I will also do the same....Good Luck Best Wishes!
