Is there any food that people find are helpful in "subduing" an Ulcerative Colitis flare up. i really dislike dealing with predinzone. right now im taking apriso for preventive measures. but i wanna know what kinds of foods would also help in calming down and preventing flareups.

suggestaname ,

I have Crohns, and ive been taking Swansons Ultimate Probiotic formula for about a year too and they have made HUGE difference! They work so well that I can function on half of my Pentasa per day instead of the the full amount with no flare up at all! They work so well that my blood work came back good to the point that my GI said that i dont have to come back for another check up till next year. And all of that on just half of my Pentasa and the Swansons Ultimate Probiotics and other swansons supplements.

Before I was dx with UC, certain foods bothered me, so I try to avoid them now. Think back on what may have caused you problems before your dx and I would suggest doing what I did..avoid those. And everyone is different as to what foods cause them problems.

I went to the health food store here in Bryan and bought a bottle of PB-8. The lady at the health food store said that this should help. I sure hope it so, because I have been bleeding so much from my bowls that I am so tired all the time. I have a daughter with MS that I care for and it is really geting me down. Do you know if eating cold meats like-ham would cause any problem-also my doctor just says you have to keep a food diary and see what causes your problem. But when you eat one then more foods at a time, that will be hard to do. Also does drinking soda bother you? Thanks for your help.

Thank you so much. I did go to the health food store here in Bryan yesterday and got a bottle of PB-8 which is a probiotic. So, I started taking that yesterday afternoon. I am also going to get on Swansons website and check that out. The bottle I bought yesterday was 14.95 but I am not sure if it would be the same thing you are taking. I just hope what I have now will help. I see it looks like you have a little poodle. I have a white one also. If you would like to e-mail me my address is rauangel@frontier.com thanks, Marilyn

My dog is a maltipoo, her name is Bella. She is actually half poodle and half maltese, exactly 50-50. But she has the curly hair a poodle has. She is just a joy and keeps us laughing all the time.

The cost for the Swanson's Ultimate Formula Probiotic is now $8.99...it was $14.99, so how long this sale will last, I really don't know.

Hope your PB-8 helps you. Let us know how you're doing.

My dogs name is Angel she is our third poodle. She is going on 13 years old. My Cocoa lived to be 14 1/2. It sure is hard when you loose one. But I think once angel is gone that I won't get another dog.
I will let you know if the PB-* works. Can you tell me what foods that you have to watch out for? Do you think cold meat like ham would bother me. This is all new for me, so I am lost at what to eat and what not to eat.
Thanks, Marilyn.

Marilyn, I can't eat a lot of fresh veggies, like celery, cucumbers, but just a lettuce and tomato salad are fine. Onion soup is my favorite and it used to be "trouble" for me, but for some reason, I can tolerate it now.

Also, a lot of fresh fruit is sometimes a problem for me. Now I can eat ham and other lunch meat and it doesn't bother me. I can only tell you to try these different things and if they do bother you, don't have them for awhile. Then possibly give them a try down the road. Also, popcorn, sunflower seeds (which I love) are a real problem for me.

We all seem to have our individual no-nos. We just have to adjust our lives to eliminate things we like, or eat them and suffer. I think we're all guilty of that. If we like something, even if it does bother us, we might try it again.

Our Bella is just 1-1/2 years old. We had a 16 year old Cocker Spaniel that we had to put to sleep two years ago. Maxie was, without a doubt, the perfect dog. He never did anything wrong..really, he was absolutely perfect. So needless to say, we were devastated when we had to put him down. We said, because we are retired and on the move here and there a lot, another dog wasn't in our future. Well, After our Maxie, I waited three weeks and ended up getting Bella. She is great tho, but quite a little diva.

Thank you so much for the info on what to eat. I have no idea where to start tring to figure this out. I have eaten the same foods for years and never had a problem until now. I guess i just eat one thing at a time and then maybe I can get a idea of what I can eat and can't. If you eat a meal with several different foods, it would be hard to tell which one is causing the problem. Today I am having some chicken on the grill and just a bake potatoe without the skin. They say that mile products may be a problem and also diet coke that I love. But I have not had any milk or diet coke for several days, and it isn't any better. i am about to go nuts trying to figure this out. I am one of these people that wants it fix NOW!! Guess that isn't going to happy-right?

We had our poodle Cocoa for over 14 years. We also had to have her put down. That was really very hard. I went out three days after and bought Angel. My husband didn't want me to get another dog, but he loves Angel as much as I do.

Thanks, again for your input. anything you can share will be a big help for me. Are you on here a lot?? Like I said feel free to e-mail me rauangel@frontier.com Thanks, Marilyn

Crohns_UC_Man responded:
Absolutely!! Yogurt is the best. I'm currently attending medical school, have Crohn's and UC, and have done quite a bit of personal research on it. You might have seen in the news lately how parasites or worm eggs help calm Crohn's and UC flares. Well, Yogurt does the same, just to a lesser degree. The easiest, non-nerdy sounding way to explain it is that it gives your immune system "something to play with" besides your own intestine. Don't give up on eating yogurts, and try a couple different brands. Some may not help and will leave you feeling the same, others will almost be as good and fast acting as prednisone its self. This is due to the strains individual companies use and how well these cultures are preserved as they make their way to super market! Good luck! (Just an FYI, the incidence of undiagnosed lactose intolerance in Crohns and UC patients is pretty high. Throw a lactaid in with your daily yogurt regimine and you'll do great!) Let me know how it goes.

As like many have said, banannas, toast, brown rice which I like to add to chicken soup making a stew type dish., I have also read to avoid butter.

I am in a flare up now and without insurance cannot see a doctor, I quit smoking a year ago and this may be part of my flare up, getting some bloody mucus but not much. I have some rowasa enema left over from previous and have been using that.

If you're still suffering from c diff, i not too long ago read an article about a woman who had it for something like 2 yrs...finally her doctor did a procedure called (extremely yucky) Fecal transplant. I was mortified to find out what it is and how they do it but you can investigate it at your leisure. The main point is that she no longer has it after undergoing the procedure. It's very extreme, but an option nonetheless.

Although I've never had c diff, i am at this very moment trying to work thru a flare up (its 4:45 am & haven't been able to get comfortable enough to sleep a wink). The pain is excruciating as all who come here looking for answers already know. I once took hyocyomine & it worked wonders. But i see the chats about probiotics & find myself very interested. I prefer to not take the prescriptions if there is a less expensive alternative to try.

Good luck to all of us trying to tame these painful intestinal episodes.

After your research did u find any yogurts that were better than others? My mom suggested Activia but she said it tasted so bad she couldn't eat it.

Also, if i cant find a yogurt that works, would i be better off going to a place like GNC or are there probiotic brands that work just as well in stores like Walgreens?

Thanks for any input you may have for me

My mom has Chrones and she has been fightin it after I was born. I hate to hear her cry when she has flare ups. I give her water, a cold compress, and a trash can. She does so much for me, I work hard in school just to make her happy. I really need help, how can I help her make the pain go away? Please don't say medication, that's what usually starts the flare ups. I don't want to hear her suffer, cry, or in pain anymore. Please help me!
