I have been on probiotics for over two years now and I plan on continuing them. I'm on Dr. Swanson's Ultimate Formula Probiotics. You can purchase them on line at Swansonsvitamins.com. I think they're the best. I did try others, but these work the best for me.

I do know that they don't work for everyone. I just know that I am very pleased with the results I get.

Hope this helps.

I haven't read the Cycle-Breaking book, yet... But on my own, I found that nothing gave me energy, and actually stayed in my belly better than a Baconator (no bun) from Wendy's. I can't explain it, but everyone I reccommend this to comes back and thanks me. For me, a baconator diet for under a week gets my bowels back in order, no matter what medication I am on at the time. Once my flair is under control, I can eat most anything, except for some flair foods I have identified for myself.

Hope this helps someone.

I definitely wouldn't recommend remicade to everyone...especially if you want to have children. It can cause serious birth defects, and that is why my boyfriend, who has been having bad flare-ups off and on for about a year, has been holding off on making a decision regarding it.

The best remedy that I have found during flare-ups is Honey. You can also eat this everyday to help prevent them too. Take 3 tsps of Honey 3 times a day during flare-up. Take it by itself, don't mix with water or food. It will stop those symptoms pretty quick. After doing some research, they say the "Manuka Honey" is the best for Ulcerative Colitis. If you can't get this kind, you can use regular honey from the supermarket. Hope this info helps.

Sounds interesting to me. Where did you initially get this info from? I love honey so it was be no problem at all for me to take this. I'm not in a flare, but I am having hip replacement surgery in 3 weeks and want to be sure that between now and then my UC doesn't start to flare.

I will look for Manuka honey.

Thanks for the info.

Your welcome for the info! I have found that honey really works from my own experience. I tend to get flare-ups from food allergies or food intolerances. Anyway, during one of my flare-ups, I was at the same time experiencing bad heart-burn. I started eating honey cause I thought it would help the heart-burn. Well, I noticed after I ate about 3 or 4 tsps, my other uc symptoms started calming down. I knew I was on to something here. Now, I take honey every day. I also talked with a man who was selling local raw honey at the flea market. He said that honey also kills all bacteria and infection especially in the digestive track. It's also very good for allergies. It's a natural antibiotic. I've also read online about Manuka Honey but I myself haven't tried it yet. I haven't been able to find Manuka Honey in town, so you may have to google Manuka Honey and you can order it online. Manuka Honey comes from New Zealand and it is stronger than regular honey. When you take honey, take it on an empty stomach and wait about 30 minutes before you eat. I think it works the best that way. Good luck with your health.

I couldn't find Manuka Honey in our area...I might purchase it on line at swansonsvitamins.com, where I get my probiotics. It is quite expensive on certain health food sites or even drugstore.com, but Swanson's prices are more reasonable. At any rate, my husband and I were curious as to the difference in honeys on our supermarket's shelves...Wildflower Honey, Clover Honey, etc. etc. We were confused. Any thoughts on this?

I really do appreciate your response. Thanks again.

BleuSea5 replied to arbob5's response:
I take the "Clover Honey". Also, if there is a Family Dollar in your area, I buy their "Pure Honey Clover" from Groeb Farms. This seems to work well with me. The darker color honeys are good too. Good luck. Let me know if the Manuka Honey helps you.

More very helpful info. Again, thanks. I have a Family Dollar a block away, so I will go there later today. I am on Meijer's Pure Clover Honey now. Color wise, it's about midway between light and dark. I'll finish this (I bought a small squeeze container) and then try the Groeb Farms honey.

We shall see how it works. Have a great day everyone!

Well, it appears that honey is not the answer for me. I actually am having more problems with my colitis. Mini flare or something like that. Of course, I'm rather tense because of upcoming hip surgery on the 16th, but I was so hoping honey would be a help in case of a flare. Funny thing is, I wasn't in a flare, but as I said, a mini-flare now.

I'll continue the honey for a few more days and see what happens.

Can you eat commercial yogurt or does it have to be homemade?

You will probably have to order Manuka honey online since the real stuff comes from New Zealand. I've tried a few brands and really like Wedderspoon Raw Organic Manuka Honey (16 ). The flavor is a bit medicinal but definitely not BAD. I do a teaspoon in the am with some hot water and lemon. It's also great for when you feel colds coming on!

I have found that the best probiotic is VSL#3. It is made especially for patients with ulcerative colitis. I get it at a compounding pharmacy in my city. It works wonders for me.

Bio K is a probiotic yogurt you can get at most health food stores or whole foods. It's like probiotic yogurt time 100 and calms down your stomach super well. I found out about it right when I started getting a flare and it stopped it in it's tracks.
