I'm just sorry fecal transplants weren't around when I made the decision to choose a J Pouch. Now I'm so miserable with it, I just want my life to come to an end already.

You can still have fecal transplants done if you're so miserable. And you moping around on the site is not helping anybody. And this is obviously a plug for whoever Sky Curtis is and trying to scam people into buying whatever protocol that is. You don't have to follow a protocol. You find a donor with good bacteria, put some poop in a blender and mix it with a little saline. Then give yourself an enema with it. There is no need to buy any protocol.

Crohn's disease is incurable.

You're getting all defensive over nothing Hannah. I've heard lots of good news about fecal transplants. From what I've heard they appear to be fairly successful and a lot easier than living with a miserable J Pouch.

I disagree about this just being a plug. Yes, the process is simple enough as you describe it, although I know many people would like some added encouragement and details to guide them. Before she had a book I was introduced to her by a prominent doctor who pioneered fecal transplants in the U.S. Sky was a mentor to me at no financial benefit to her at the time and I am truly grateful for her advice and encouragement.

As for saying that Crohn's Disease being incurable, that's what doctors still say about Ulcerative Colitis. If the root cause is the same as for Ulcerative Colitis bacterial imbalance in the intestines then I see no reason this treatment cannot work for Crohn's Disease as well.

To Miserable_SOB, I am so sorry. I was literally days away from having surgery and I'm grateful I heard about fecal transplants when I did. But man, I really had to fight for it when I did it in 2011.

Ulcerative Colitis is also incurable without surgical removal of the entire colon.

Such a negative statement, but you are right that this is the current standard answer by doctors in the U.S. However there also is no definition of remission without signs of the illness and without the use of drugs.

In addition to my personal experience and those of many others 6 cases of sustained absence of Colitis for 1 - 13 years without drugs were documented in an article published in the Journal of Gastroenterology "Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis Using Fecal Bacteriotherapy" (Barody et al. 2003) http://www.cdd.com.au/pdf/publications/paper17.pdf

As Dr. Borody notes in the article (page 46-47) "there is currently no definition for remission that demands colonoscopic and histologic normality with no re-occurrence after a prolonged period without without medication. Perhaps in the future, if such therapy can acheive prolonged absence of UC without maintenance drugs, the result should be considered a 'cure'."

Removing the colon to cure the illness is like removing a leg to cure a leg infection. You can't have an illness on a limb or body organ that has been amputated.


There have been many illnesses in the history of medicine that have been defined as incurable that are now considered to be curable. Treatment options have also improved dramatically over the years and many illnesses including cancer and bacterial infections that were treated by amputation or removal of the bodily organ in the past are now treated using methods that leave the human body intact.
