Disney Anti-Obesity Cartoon Villains Go Too Far?

Olivia_WebMD_Staff posted:
Disney has joined the fight against childhood obesity with its own "Habit Heroes" website featuring cartoon heroes and villains. The villains -- Sweet Tooth, The Slacker, Lead Bottom, Control Freak, Drama Queen, and Ice Cappucinno -- are not drawn in a flattering way. And, that lead to quite a bit of negative feedback from the public around the campaign .

Check out the article and get a look at the characters, then tell us what you think. Are these cartoons detrimental to our kids' self esteem or do you think some folks are just making a big deal out of nothing?

What do you think is a good way to build a child's self esteem?

What about just plain good role models, like always? I am forced to ask, however, if the character is a villain, why would they be drawn in a flattering manner anyway? Given that the cartoons seem to be trying to shame kids into doing right, that is, showing them the error of their ways, aren't some bad feelings designed to be part of it, with the idea that if they feel bad enough and have the problem identified, they will change?

"Lead Bottom" & "Glutton"...those are my favs. If you can't be happy on the happiest place on earth, you got a far bigger problem than cartoon characters.

What I see in those cartoons in no different than what I see when out in public. It all looks the same to me.

I agree. Why would a villain be drawn in a flattering way?

You know, I have heard this flack about cartoon characters affecting our kids since I was a kid and Bugs Bunny was supposed to be bad for me. I can't recall ever thinking that a cartoon character was in any way real. They are cartoons. Kids are smarter than some people out there would like to give them credit for being.

If we're talking about overweight cartoon characters, I LOVED Fat Albert when I was a kid and I can't remember watching it and thinking negative thoughts about obese kids. He was just funny.

Well love and proper attention. Parents can not substitute that. Your children will always have outside negative influences so you can't control that wether is a super Hero or someone super stupid.

What you can control is the loving reassurance you give them ever day. That works. In the end they will imitate what they see in you the parents the most.
