Why are Americans Obese?

Olivia_WebMD_Staff posted:
Did you know that, according to statistics, 42% of Americans will be considered obese by the year 2030? And, the number of children and teens with Type 2 diabetes is growing at an alarming rate.

On May 14 & 15, HBO will air its "The Weight of the Nation " series that will explore obesity in the U.S. WebMD is going to be following the show with our own series of blog posts starting next week. The facts are certainly disturbing.

Why do you think Americans are fat?

Hey I just might take you up on that. Presently I am in communication with a Nigerian Prince in an attempt to transfer a very large sum of money. Well the transfer fees I sent pretty well tapped my out. So I have to come up with some more cash for delivery and routing fees. Thanks for that heads up. Matter of fact I got hooked up with the Nigerian Prince through a buddy of mine step sister. Wow talk about coincidence!!!

If you were to ask people the question, "How does the Farm Bill affect what our kids eat in school?" most could only shrug. Little do they know that its this massive piece of legislation that explains why you still see sloppy joes, pink lemonade, mash potatoes with gravy and sugar cookies served in school cafeterias around the country.

  1. We are obese because of what we eat.
  2. We eat what we eat because it's what our parents fed us.
  3. Our parents fed us what's cheap to buy.
  4. What's cheap to buy is based, in large part, on what our government subsidizes...

The Farm Bill...

When we think of farmers, we envision "produce" that we can see, touch, and feel in the supermarkets. But, the majority of crops that farmers grow in this country must, first, pass through the bellies of animals before they ever see our table...ie. Meat and Dairy. This is what we eat...This is what's always on sale, every week...This is why we eat fast food. All courtesy of:

The Farm Bill...

With energy prices escalating, the Farm Bill must get bigger; a nation must be fed...

The only question is: Fed what?

Im from Canada, and when I go to the US I always make some type of statement as to the size of portions recived there. My way of explaining it would be that the Canadian small coffee from McDonald's would be the same size as a medium from a McDonald's in the US. (Can Sm = US Med) And the price for the Canadian small is the same as the American medium. Im not sure why the portions are always bigger in the US than in Canada, but I often see some people that would be considered obese (especially at any fast food places) and I think how can these people become so large? I know of a legal case that a person held against White Castle, and how their seats should be bigger so then that person can sit there comfortably. I think that weight loss is possible for those people, ( I have went on diets to lose weight, but for wrestling). There are simple ways of doing it, not having that half dozen BigMacs and wanting an extra large pop can significantly cut weight; and it would be easy for people, weigh not specific, like that to lose weight. It was very hard for me to lose weight, but I went from 78kg (171.6 lbs) to 73.4kg (161.48lbs) in just 1 week; I lost so much weight I could go to the next weight class (72kg or 158.4lbs) compared to 77kg (169.4lbs).
My point is that weight loss is an easy goal for the obese people. If simple lifetime habits get changed then those changes can affect the people around them, which then can affect other people. It starts with one person, but who is going to be that one person that can start a revolution in the way Americans eat. If that one person happens to make a change, then it could start affecting other countries, like Canada.

If a Canadian Small is the American Medium that would make Canada's portions larger than ours.

But I think the real question is...If everything is bigger in Texas, what's a Texan small?

Americans are fat because we actually do not eat REAL FOOD primarily anymore. Our bodies were designed for natural things which includes meat and veggies. Check out this article that Dr Mark Hyman just wrote that explains how we can easily control and manage:

Well before 18 days ago, I would have had a different response to this question. Especially since I have gained 24 pounds in the last year, 31 pounds in the past 2 years.

I have always had a strong desire for sugary sweet desserts 24/7. I am 49 years old and have been driven by compulsion/impulsiveness for as long as I can remember.

I was so lucky to have stumbled across an article about Adult ADHD. I was floored to find myself reading about all my craziness. I took a quiz and scored off the charts for ADHD. I am now on Ritalin and my sugar cravings have gone from a 10 to a 3 on a scale from 1-10.

I truly believe there are adults walking around not knowing they have a neurological disorder in their brains leading to chronic overeating.

I would love to hear from people. I have a blog http://www.thehummingbirdeffect.com

I am committed to bringing awareness of this disorder to the world.
