Summer Memories

After a long weekend, I thought it might be soothing to talk about a lighter topic.

This article from a Canadian publication about this district planning to ban ice cream truck music got me thinking fondly about favorite summer memories from my childhood and teen years.

Jump into this thread and share YOUR favorite summer memories.

And, is there a sight, smell or other sensation that just brings those memories pouring back for you?

LOL - Ice Cream truck music banned! How will kids know when the cold stuff is near???? That is ridiculous!

The smell of the beach and peach cobbler bring back great summer memories for me.

Running through the water sprinklers while my dad watered the lawn in the late afternoon. Every time I see a water sprinkler this is what I think about. Oh such cool and wet fun.

The annual Ford company picnic at the now defunct Crystal Beach Amusement Park near Fort Erie, Ontario. I miss that place very, very much.

my best friend and I (who lived next door to one another) waiting for our dads to get home from work after filling our radio flyer wagons with as many water balloons as we were able to fill and tie (the filling was easy, the tying not so much), hiding and waiting to attack. and then our mothers giving our fathers a heads up on our plan, and our dads grabbing the garden hoses rolled up on the side of the house as they walked to the backyard and surprising us. within minutes it was a free for all, with our moms and dads soaked along with us.

there are days when i would trade all my adult years for those afternoons when i was six years old again

One of my favorite summer memories from being a kid is catching what we in the South call 'lightning bugs' and putting them in a jar by my bed to watch as I fell asleep at night.

We didn't have air conditioning, so the fan would be blowing on me, and I would listen to the crickets and the frogs singing away outside my window.

One of the smells that always brings summer sharply to mind is that earthy smell of rain on hot dirt. Do you know what I am talking about? It's just a smell that doesn't happen in the winter.

Even as an adult I so look forward to summer and all that comes with it!

That's such a fun memory!

Thanks for sharing it with us. I love those hot summer days where hoses and water balloons abound.

Keep remembering being six. It definitely keeps like in perspective as you get older. Trust me!

I think I'll call the 7-Eleven and ask if they have "Dr. Pepper in a can", instead...It's safer.

hairyd replied to brunosbud's response:
That the part of being a Kid. You have FUN.
Playing it safe. ( BUT be reasonable)
Can ruin the FUN!!!!

Spitting watermelon seeds with my dad on the porch. Swimming in the lake, and later in the ocean. That durn ice cream truck... now I hate them but I loved them when I was little. Getting a huge (to me anyway) cone of soft serve ice cream. It's funny, my memories of summer seem happier the younger I was, even though I wasn't really having more fun... the little things just meant more, I think.

Now I am making new happy summertime memories. Like watching lightning with my spouse during monsoon season, listening to the thunder crashing all around us, and watching the water bucket down. Then the sky clears and the desert smells rich and rain washed and there's sap running in every plant. Morning comes and it's dry and hot again... until the next rain, that is.
