Talkative on Abilify

Hey everyone,

I've been on Abilify for a week (2mg 1x day) and have been on Wellbutrin XL (450mg) for more than 2 years. I've noticed that I've become extremely talkative; I just can't stop. Even tonight, I'm sitting here alone and starting playing music so I could sing along out loud.

Is this the Abilify? This isn't typical behavior for me, but it also seems like an odd side effect. Or is this what "normal" is? I've just about forgotten.

No clue on Abilify. I was on Wellbutrin at one time, didn't notice that particular side effect. May be a effect of being on both. Talk to Doc about it. Sounds more like a high of some kind. If it's making you feel "normal", then good for you. I'd still talk to Doc about it.

I've never been on Abilify either. The only thing I know that makes me very talkative like that is anesthesia! LOL Whenever I'm coming out of it I ask questions and chitty chat before I can hardly talk.
I would say if you're not normally that talkative, to alert your doctor of it, just like Demons said. It might be something that will pass as your body gets used to the new med, but it still bears looking into.

Hello An 232, i was on abilify, but do not recall having that side effect. i have not been on welbutrinxl, so cannot answer about that one. When you say talkative, could that mean you mood is much better that you feel like talking? just a thought.

hello, A263 --

webMD info on aripiprazole/abilify is at http://www.webmd.com/drugs/drug-64437-aripiprazole oral.aspx . i don't see anything in the list of side effects that i would equate to becoming extremely talkative other than it is supposed to help you "take a more active part in everyday life; "restlessness" is listed as common, but doesn't really strike me as the same thing.

webMD info on bupropion/wellbutrin is at http://www.webmd.com/drugs/mono-155-BUPROPION - ORAL.aspx?drugid=13507&drugname=bupropion HCl Oral&source=2 . restlessness is listed as a common side effect, and "behaving with excessive cheerfulness and activity" and "having a false sense of well-being" as rare ones. these might approach the concept of becoming extremely talkative, but none of them seems to be the real equivalent of the others. on the other hand, altho the timing seems to implicate the abilify rather than the wellbutrin, the wellbutrin materials state that if you experience "severe restlessness" and/or "very rapid speech" while you are taking it, you are supposed to call your dr immediately.

the way you say that you've "become extremely talkative" and "just can't stop" almost sounds manic, but it also occurs to me that perhaps it is just a reflection of your starting to feel better, i.e., more energetic, with the addition of the abilify. are you ADHD or bipolar? is there a possibility that this could be the start of a manic or hypomanic phase?

i'm afraid that these guesses (and they are a layperson's guesses, i am not a medical person) are the best i can do. i suggest that if you are still noticing that you are talking more than you normally do, you call your dr. do not reduce your dosage of or stop taking either of these meds (see PS) without talking with your dr first.

PS -- one other side effect i wanted to be sure you are aware of -- abilify and wellbutrin taken together can interact in a way that makes seizures more likely.

Hey everyone,

I want to thank you all for your information and advice. I talked to my doctor and he brought up some important points regarding mania and the like, but based on my description, he thinks it's just part of the improvement factor. Basically, I'm talking more because I'm in a better mood, so that's good

I'd been feeling bad for so long that once I started talking again and being more proactive and motivated, I questioned whether it was real. I'd forgotten what "normal" meant, more or less.

Anyway, I think the Abilify is a success so far. I'm glad to have found this resource, though, and hope to keep using it.

Thank you again
