Depressed son

I'm new to this group and just read a few posts in the "Depressed husband" thread. I divorced a depressed husband almost 20 years ago when I had NO understanding of what depression was. Now I am living with a depressed son (21 years old, dropped out of college last year), and although I understand a lot more about depression now, I have absolutely no idea how to deal with this. He takes an antidepressant and sees a psychologist every other week. He has NO friends and NO life. He lives in his bedroom, which stinks to high heaven because of the two cats that live with him (we've had many a "discussion" about the cleaning of the cat box). Because of the stench in his room, he and his clothes also stink. He does minimal chores around here when asked but will not (CAN not?) clean up his own space or himself. I had to ask him three or four times yesterday before he finally took a shower (first one in probably a week).

My heart breaks for him. He is extremely smart, funny, good looking (when he's clean), and sociable whenever we have company. People who meet him like him. He was also diagnosed with Asperger's (mild) as a teen and had a very rough time with his peers in school (a target for teasing for being smart and bookish and because his reactions to teasing were often violent).

OK, enough for now. We live in a very rural area where there are not a lot of resources. When I've called the offices where he goes for his antidepressant medication, it seems the choices are to have him "admitted" or make an appointment for counseling (which he already has). I don't know what to do.
