More muscles, less blood sugar!

Finally! With some added core strength exercise sessions, and 2 water classes a week, plus walking on the remaining days, my body has reached the stage of 1. more muscles to burn up the blood sugar better and 2. less fat in the abdominal area that kept the cells from accepting the insulin bringing in the sugars. (Very scientific explanation-lol).

Anyway it took several years of cutting back carbs even more and developing more muscles to reach the point now where my fasting sugars and testings 2 hours after a meal are often in the mid 80's. Now I have to eat more often, but I still keep my carbs per meal to under 20 grams. I eat more non starchy veggies. I have also cut WAY back on the cheese I used to eat, and eat more nuts, which are non saturated fat.

I keep glucose tabs with me when I exercise heavily and have 1/2 tab (2 grams glucose) twice during the hour workout. Then my ending glucose is about the same as my beginning. I need that fast acting stuff for this level of activity. It is interesting that at times, my glucose will rise an hour AFTER exercise even though I haven't eaten again. I think my body is still absorbing the low glycemic foods like lentils that I ate earlier. This is almost MUCH too complicated for me to deal with!

a good blog about different types of exercise and your blood sugar response. what you're eating probably has less to do with your glucose rising after a workout than what you did

Flute...I just saw this. Thanks! Because I'm exercising pretty intensely, I "think" that's why my bs levels go "up"! I have found when I cut the exercise routine down to 50 min. instead of an hour, and do it a little less intensely, it is working better for me.
On Friday, I did an hour of UJam, walked hills for 15 min. one way and 15 back again for a photo shoot, and then did salsa dancing at night. I'm "still" gaining weight. It's pretty frustrating. I'm not eating any differently. I'm back to eating a small apple a day. I used to eat nuts, but got so sick of eating those. I probably should start that again!

Glad to hear you're doing so well. My morning numbers are still a little higher, but I'm doing okay, as long as I continue to workout. When I had the pinched nerve in my back and couldn't exercise because of the intense pain, I gained about 3 lbs. in just 2 1/2 weeks not exercising. I gain so easily.

Hi Photo. I have found, much to my dismay, that the amount of weight I originally thought was all I had to lose, was just not enough! I am even considering "photoshopping" my middle section in some of the family photo reprints to look more like it does now, after all that weight loss.

Now that I am down to 135 lbs at 5' 5 1/2 ", my body mass index is 22.3 and my body fat is 27% of my total weight, which is pretty good for age 73. It also took added strength and core exercise to finally get my fasting sugars to drop. Now they are in the 80s at least half the time, and also 2 hrs. after meals it is back down to th 90s. It took several years, however to reach this point. Whenever the sugar went up, I sut back even further on the carbs. Only now can I eat a little more. Keep working at it and it may all fall into place.

I started weight training, but I have so many problems with my shoulders, neck, and back, that I didn't want to take the chance of injuring them again. I had that pinched nerve, which scared me so much. Now, I'm just doing my UJam exercises(4 to 5)times a week, swimming once, and doing my outside dancing.I think that's enough. I probably could lift light weights, too...nothing over my head, though.

Photo, I probably don't exercise nearly as strenuously as you do. I started into exercising more than walking and recreational swimming about 5 years ago, never realizing how much good it would do and how much I look forwad to it. It is one of the high points of my life now! But----on a very careful level for my age (73), being sure not to hurt myself. I agree with you on that!

When I realized that my fasting sugars on annual checkups throughout many years were really NOT O.K. when they were always around 100, but were at the start of developing a serious disease, only then did I seriously cut back carbs, and I keep on cutting back every time they go up, even when it is because of other meds. etc.

When I had Lyme disease and then was on doxycycline, they went up. I cut back on the carbs until they were back down. Now I can eat a little more because my fasting sugar this morning was 83 on no meds. I "eat to my exercise". Just before, eat a litt more, during - eat 2 grams (1/2 glucose tab twice), and after only enough so that I use most of it up before bedtime.
