This is a question to be discussed between you and your medical team. There is no easy answer...are you overweight? What meds are you taking? What is your activity level? Without knowing the facts around your diagnosis and your overall health, no one can make a reasonable suggestion.

From an overall general guideline perspective, many people start with about 45 grams for breakfast, 60 for lunch, 60 for dinner and one or two small snacks. But that doesn't work for everyone and if you want to lose weight, you might want to eat less carbs. If you are highly sensitive to carbs, you might want to cut back considerably. If you are normal weight and extremely active, you may need a bit more.

Diabetes management is not a "one size fits all" situation.

You could start with the recommendations above. But get a glucose meter and test two hours after eating. If you find you're consistently above 140, then cut back on carbs.

Losing weight can make a huge difference. I recommend you read Dr. Dansinger's tips on weight loss and diabetes management. You'll find his picture and links on the right side of this page. I personally know one of his patients (long time friend of mine) who has lost 50 pounds, significantly lowered both his blood sugar and cholesterol with a very low carb approach. Not everyone is willing or able to do low carb, though. There are other approache that will work. The trick is to find the one that you can stick with.

Michelle has given you some great guidelines. Have you talked with a dietician at all? Everyone is different so it's very hard to give a concrete answer. There are so many variables involved.

I was an uncontrolled diabetic at diagnosis, so my dietician gave me a carb limit of 35-45 grams at each meal. The less carbs I eat the less insulin I need to use.

The two hour post-prandial is a great indicator at how your body reacts to carbs. That number should be 140 or under, as Michelle indicated. Try and test after each meal for a week and see what your numbers are.

Carbs are a diabetic's nemesis. We need to be very careful and count carefully to keep our numbers under control.
