Collecting Urine Sample From Child HELP!

My daughter will be 5 years old this month. She has severe mental retardation due to a rare brain defect. She recently had blood work for her Neurologist that showed high gluclose levels. I took her to her pediatrician and that doctor now wants to check her for diabetes. She did the blood work last Friday, now the hard part is getting a urine sample. My daughter is still in diapers. The pediatrician's offfice gave me one Pediatric Urine Collector but that was a disaster. She doesn't understand any of these medical procedures she has to go through plus the collector didn't stick they way its supposed to. I told the lab where she had the blood work done and they gave me a few more Pediatric Urine Collectors and a cup to transfer the urine in once its collected. Again I tried putting the urine collector in place; it was slightly easier the second time around but again doesn't seem to want to stay in place and seems too small for my daughter. My daughter is average height/ weight (not overweight) but the Pediatric Urine Collector seems too small, more appropriate for an infant not a 5 year old. I tried putting her on the toilet to have her pee directly in the cup but after 2hrs sitting on the toilet (holding the cup for her) nothing happen. Strange because she drinks allllll the time and pees a lot (a lot of diaper changes). Is there any other way to get a urine sample from a child that's not potty trained? I've even considered squeezing the urine out of a saturated diaper into the cup but not sure what that will do to the test since they are testing her for diabetes. Any suggestions?? I need help!

I would ask the dr. about squeezing the diaper. Maybe using a cloth diaper, since it wouldn't have all the absorbent stuff, would work better. The only other thing i can think of is having the dr. put a catheter in which i think would be too scary and traumatic for her.

I just read an article today that suggested putting cotton balls inside the diaper. Once she pees, (with gloves) squeeze the urine out of the cotton balls and into the cup.

pediatric urine collectors are in fact to be used for infants in diapers.

Do you have a children's hospital nearby..they may have something more suitable for an older child. Another option is collecting by catheter, but that's pretty invasive.

Why does the doctor need a urine sample? Diabetes is diagnosed by the amount of glucose in the blood, and ketones can also be measured in blood. Sugar in the urine is usually the first sign and then diagnosis is confirmed by blood test, so really a urine sample after the blood test is redundant.

The pediatrician called for full blood work and urine anaylsis. The blood work was done last friday. The urine sample was supposed to be turned in the same day but my daughter had difficulties with the urine collector. The pediatrician is doing the urine test because the type of test this is looks at the kidneys for the past few months to see how they are functioning. Something like that. I forget the name of the test. Since the blood work was completed only a few days ago I dont know what came of those results and wont until all the tests are in and we talk with the pediatrician.

Having relatives with type 2 diabates I was told this is standard testing to do both blood work and urine testing to determine diabetes. Originally, she had blood work done for her Neurologist in April and that showd slightly high gluclose levels. The Neurologist told me to take her back to the pediatrican to see what that doctor thought.

I have been thinking about this all day, have you tried loosely covering the bowl with plastic wrap and sitting your daughter on the the toilet? You should be able to dip off a few spoonfuls.

I would be inclined to do this first thing in the morning, as most of us have to "go" fairly soon after waking and I would think it would be tough to hold it for a couple of hours.
