Buying bagged salad, precut fruit & veggies - "lazy"?

Dole Fresh Vegetables is voluntarily recalling 2,598 cases of "Dole Hearts of Romaine" bagged salad because of possible Listeria contamination.

A conversation over in one of the parenting communities started about prepared "fresh" foods - some moms thought they were great time savers, others thought it was silly when cutting up salad and fruit is so easy.

I buy peeled and sliced mango and bagged spinach. Occasionally a bag of salad but it goes bad quickly.

Do you think it's lazy or unhealthy to use these products or do they make it easier to make better food choices?

I think convenience foods are a great idea. Yeah, it's probably better if you go to the farmer's market and buy your produce. But that's not always practical for busy people. You can walk into the grocery store, buy pre-cut chicken or beef, pre-packaged veggies for a stirfry, and instant brown rice. That's got to be better than picking up a pizza or dinner at your local fast food joint. You can actually cook that meal in 15 minutes.

Not laziness in my opinion.

I try to do as much as I can but I work, go to school and take care of my family and home. If I need a short cut and can afford it...where is the problem?! At least it is not a bag of burgers on gooey white buns, taco's without real meat, hamburger helper with 40% of your daily sodium intake and no fiber or heaven forbid boxed mac and cheese.

We had spinach salad last night with grilled chicken breast. I cleaned the spinach, toasted the organic walnuts, made my own croutons with whole wheat bread, boned, skinned and cooked the chicken and chopped the dates, onions and avocado. If that wasn't enough I made my own olive oil and white balsamic vinegar dressing. The whole process took about an hour.

Hmm, I could have cut 20 minutes off the prep time had I bought a bag of cleaned spinach. Would that have meant I cared for my family less or it had less nutrition? NO. But unfortunately I haven't figured out how to grow the spinach without stems and in a bag.
