I also heard that too much protein can be tricky for your kidneys to digest and can cause damage later on. Is there any truth to this?

No, there isn't. An already damaged kidney cannot tolerate as much protein (it makes the kidneys work harder), but a diet high in animal protein (which many T2s will eat) will not cause kidney damage.
