Type 2 question

Okay not sure how to ask this but here goes:

I always balance my foods protein / carbs so my numbers are normal. Many of you know I am not on diabetic meds haven't been since March 2010.

Okay the last few nights I wake up in the middle of the night hungry even though I have my protein/carb snack at 9pm. Anyway the other night I got up ate 1/2 slice of thin bread with 1/2 slice Swiss Cheese and a little Promise on it. I awoke at my usual time 5:30am tested my sugar I was 95 normal for me.

Last night I awoke at 1am and ate a small piece of birthday cake it was only 1" by 4" and I awoke at 5:30am tested my sugar it was 67. No sweets are not in my house the cake was left overs I just happened to be keeping for today so I can take down to the card players.

So my question is why when I eat protein/carbs my numbers are normal but when I eat only carbs I am low in the am?

Is there something going on in my system that is causing me to react differently to carbs? No I am not seeing a endo doc at this time they told me since I am in remission there is no need to be seen.

Often people who eat a carb only snack get a bit of reactive hypoglycemia. What happens is that without the protein to slow things down, you get more of a spike. Then, the pancreas accidentally overdoses you with insulin and you end up hypo. My husband has had problems with this even though he eats balanced the way you do. It's hard to treat sometimes to eat enough carb to bring you up but not too much so that you don't bring on another crash. He has been spending the last while often around 75 and isn't always that comfortable.

Dawn phenomena - eating at late night cuts it out of your cycle. At least that is my best guess.

Hey Beta - good to see you posting more often. Yes I know about the DP that is why I always eat low carbs with protein at 9pm before going to bed it does keep my sugars at a normal range for me in the AM.

I haven't eaten just carbs in the middle of the night - so it was strange for me to get a low. I had thought it would have been high because of the high sugar content.

I post when something is of interest to me. I try to stay away from the drama. I have found that my numbers are good, my health is great, and less of a need for info here than before. That said, I still feel I owe the community something for the years that I was in dire need of information and direction. My best to all here, and hope we all continue to make progress with our health.
