Which Foods Should Be Avoided For Diabetes

I have been diagnosed for Diabetes 1 and my doctor has forgotten to tell me which foods that i have to avoid. Is there anyone who knows the answer, or a website which may have this information?

You might find some of Dr. Dansinger's articles very helpful.

Ask your doctor they could recommend a dietitian that could sit down with you and talk about the foods that would be good to have as a diabetic.

Mostly stay away from "white" types of foods, like breads, pasta, rice, potatoes, and buy whole grain bread, whole wheat pasta, and brown rice. I would limit these as much as you can though and mostly go for big salads with chicken, tuna, or other fixings. For breakfast I always make sure I have protein, like an egg, and a slice of whole grain bread. People eat all kinds of things for breakfast.

Eat many different vegetables, salad fixings, protein, such as eggs, fish, white meat chicken, lean pieces of beef, veal, lamb, or go more towards lentils, beans, and nuts for protein.
Some people on here are vegetarian and really believe in that way of eating.

Try not to eat fruit like bananas, pineapples, dried fruit(raisins, etc.) as they will bring your blood sugar up more. I limit my fruit as it spikes me. I'm not on medicine, and doing this by diet and exercise along. I eat 1/2 an apple and nuts for a snack(walnuts or almonds(less fat) are the best). Don't drink juices. Stick to water, coffee, (I use decaf), diet drinks. Sodas are not the best thing to drink though. There are some sugarless drinks out there.

Some people like to eat more smaller meals. Some eat three times a day(smaller meals) with little snacks in between. That's me.

Check on Calorie King.Com for carb levels of foods you're eating. Read the labels when you buy things at the market and look at the total carbs in what you're buying.

Make sure you get in exercise every day. Check your blood sugar levels, though, as type I's have to be more careful. You might want to keep some glucose tablets or OJ for when you go lower in blood sugar levels. You might want to check two hours after you eat to see how your bs levels are doing. Try to keep them under 140. I think Gomer, who is type I said it could be higher. I don't know a lot about type I diabetes. There is another site, not WebMD. Maybe one of the other type I posters can put that out here for you to check.

Make your protein, the size of your fist, and fill up your plate with other things. I "do" have a small red potato at times with dinner.

If you were diagnosed as a Type 1, then you probably are on some kind of insulin. You really should be directed to a diabetic educator and a certified dietitian for some advice on how to balance your insulin with your carbs. Most insurance plans will cover the cost and it's really important.

In the big picture of what to avoid, stick to whole grains, fresh fruits, veggies and lean proteins. Avoid highly processed "white" food - sugar, flour, white bread, rice, etc.

Just make sure you read labels. and look at serving size. Green vegatables(spinach,green beans,etc), lean meat. Fish. Lunch meat is low carb. but no bread. Just be careful of fat free items they might be low fat but have more carbs then the regular.I use parkay butter to give the veggies a better taste and its zero carbs. low fat. Portion size I found out was the key to success.I have to measure everything. This website helped me so much also.. so ask as many questions as you like.. the people on here are very informative. I recently got diagonosed with type 2. and dlife.com helped me so much. If your like me diet pop is horrible. coke zero cherry and coke zero vanilla are both pretty good. Powerade zero. and unsweet tea. Check that website out its full of great information and recipes. hope this helps
