Newly Diagnosed Diabetes?

It can be overwhelming to be diagnosed with diabetes. You may not know what steps to take and your doctor may have written a script and handed you a few sheets of information. Here are some other steps you can take to get more information on your condition.

1. Take the Diabetes Health Check

2. Get the facts about Diabetes

3. Learn the basics of a healthy Diabetes Diet

4. Find a Certified Diabetes Educator to help you learn more about your condition and how to manage your diet, blood sugar, exercise and medications.

5. Visit the Diabetes Community often to get questions answered, support from people who know the ins and outs of living with diabetes each day.

Thank you Louise as you could not have said it better. I know that when I was diagnosed with type II, I was in deniel. Then I thought about how I felt, what was going on with my body, and my wieght. It has been a real eye opener. Now I toe the line and am dropping weight every week. I feel 100% better and smarter beacuase I read all the labels and realized that I was eating things I thought were healthy, but were not. I never drank soda, never used salt, or put sugar in my coffee or tea, but some of the crap I was eating was putting tons of that stuff into my body. I am a wonderful cook and enjoy making things that I like healthy so I have turned what could have been overwhelming and bad experience into a good one and I am doing one day at a time.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes two years ago. My fasting blood sugar was in the 140's and AIC was 6.6.

I dropped 25 pounds, exercise at least 5 days a week and switched to eating lots of vegetables, whole grains, low-fat, low-sugar diet. I use Stevia in my iced coffee.

Last year my fasting blood sugar was 133 and AIC was 6.5

Last week tested again and it was 114 and AIC was 6.3

I'm going to work with a nutritionist to lose the last 20 pounds (am 152 pounds and 5'4) and cut out even more fat and sugar in my diet.

But diet and exercise have really helped reverse this, so it's possible! I didn't take meds--the doctor said it was okay to try it without medicine through diet and exercise. I learned if doctor prescribes nutritionist my health insurance covers it, so wish I had done that from the get-go. I think I would have lost more weight and been in the normal stage by now.

Hi my name is izzy; I saw your blood test, you said it was 140 and drop,Is 140 good or bad, what are the steady or good numbers? cause when I go to hot weather in florida my sugar goes up about 20 point. no matter if I eat healthy, them when I come back to up states it goes normar,its that ok or not?

You're doing great, Ladylindajane! I also decided to try this with diet and exercise alone, when I was first diagnosed. I lost 38 lbs.and went down to a 5.8 A1c. I'm now up a few lbs., am at an A1c of 5.9, and I exercise 6 days a week. What I've found is that when I relaxed a bit in my strict eating habits, my morning numbers came up a little. I'm now trying to lose the few lbs. I've gained, and get back to eating a little stricter again. It's harder(I feel) to do this without medicine). Whatever you're doing, keep up the good work!!!

As being a newly diagnosed diabetic at first it was a bit overwheling. My blood sugar would not go down so I had to leave my job for my health.At first my blood sugar was in the high 600's. I have a de and she is very helpful.My blood sugars are coming down slowing

Hi,
I have kept my type II diabetes under control with the Atkin's diet. The day I started the diet (October 11, 2000) I stopped all medications at the doctor's request. Had bacon and eggs for breakfast, and spent 20 minutes on a treadmill. My blood sugar the day before was 187. That day after the treadmill was 87. It has been normal (A1C = 5.1) ever since, below 100 every morning. In addition I lost 53 lbs and my cholesterol went way down.
The body we are walking around with is over 60,000 years old. Farming is only 10,000 years old. So, for 50,000 years we have existed on a diet high in protein and fat and very low in carbohydrates.
Since we no longer consume the blood of animals which contains a lot of vitamins, I take an array of vitamins every day.
So, far, so good.

Good job! I have done a "maintenance" Atkins diet for about ten years with pretty good success.

I was just told I have ) my doc said I am now diagnosed with Diabetes type 2
My t1 number is 6.5 and was told stop all cokes wich I was drinking about 8 a day yes 8
and lay off the sugar and I wll be ok my doc said look at the biggest losser show and some of those folks lost all that weight and are now not diabetic and thats were I am at lose 20 -30 lbs and lay off the cokes and sugar and I ll be ok come back in 6 months SO i stopped cokes dropped 10 lbs instatly but lately I feel weird shakly feverish but no fever gittery - so i bought a test maching and the first test last week was 54 the next one was 180 and i seem to stay between 150- 180 what do i do ?
sonmeone show me the light i realy felt weird after i ate a steak and baked pottato with chocklate mouse thats when the glucos spiked to 180 am I lossing it or what im scared kinda

daviss4, This post is two years old. To get more replies, scroll to the top of the page where there is a wide light blue line and click on the orange rectangle with the words Post Now. There is also one of those at the bottom of this page. It will give you an up to date opportunity to submit your questions. You will need a lot of information on the kinds of food to eat that don't make your blood sugar go up and down so much. It is also helpful to go to Walmart, Target, or Walgreens and buy an inexpensive blood testing meter (one with the least expensive testing strips) and have the pharmacist tell you how to use it if you want to start taking data. It is good to start now rather than to wait 6 more months to let the diabetes get worse.
If at first you don't succeed, try, try again!
