What does 5 pounds look like?

If I am tempted to throw caution to the wind on a trip or vacation or restaurant meal, I just go to the meat counter in my local grocery story and pick up a 5 pound package or hamburger and visual that spread throughout my body and in my cells causing even more insulin resistance.

Even worse is the thought that even though I can gain 5 pounds easily in a couple days, it takes at least five WEEKS to get it back off again without starving or going low.

I absolutely agree that it is weird that I work hard to lose every pound and can regain it very quickly.

That is why I basically try not to consider food a treat or reward. That is when I find myself making really bad decisions.

As long as I keep thinking of food as fuel I need to run my body, I am able to try to keep sticking with high test fuel! LOL

I keep telling myself not to eat anything that doesn't have nutritional value. That pretty much rules out all junk food and fast foods.

That is the thing, you have to be aware of what you eat, and control the portions especially with foods higher in caloric count. I wonder how people eat that big plate of pasta at home or in a restaurant, and not gain. Truth is, they do! I do a salad a day, and another meal of basically vegetables and protein with some whole grain of some sort. My biggest meal anymore is probably breakfast, and the smallest is dinner. Lunch, or Supper in some parts of the country, is moderate in size. We also have to realize that our activity levels vary. If you are on a vacation where you are constantly active you have to consume more to keep up. However, it is hard then to revert back to the old dietary demands after you have gotten used to eating more. I think Phototaker can attest to that after her recent vacation.

Good question.......

I have been having a time with stocking the frig/freezer. MY wIFe has been bringing home JUNK, big bags of french toast frozen, waffles and pancakes galore, hardly room for me to store what I like or should eat. Oh muffins galore, fresh cider, had some for breakfast today, donuts you name it.

Yesterday she sat in her couch-potatoe seat, where she spnds most of her time, eating a can of cake frosting!

Seems the more I try and stock semi-better for us foods, the more junk she brings home, BTW I do the regular grocery shopping.

If a stranger were to ask others to just look at us and pick out the diabetic one, my wife would win hands down. She is not only shorter but far heavier, about 5'2 and around 200lbs? Her mother and brother were BOTH diabetic, one would think she would at least moderate some..........

My diet has not been great lately and guess what? I GAINED about 5 lbs, thanks to all the junk around. I even like and allow myself SOME, but when there is little else but JUNK...and little room to store anything else, well you know what happens.

Yeah, I sympathize with you. I am 5'9" and 151. Wife is 5'6" and 183, with a history of family diabetes. Our Dr. thinks she is fine, and yet I got diabetes. No family history, 167 when diagnosed, 34" waist! In all fairness, she does have other health issues not related to weight. Go figure. It is what it is so I deal with it. She does not eat unhealthy though, and does not hamper me in my diet. Her biggest sin is a serving of juju bees every night!

As someone who has (in the past) lost 20 pounds in a week, I would rather lose 5 pounds slowly. The slower I lose it, the more likely I am going to keep off the weight.

A former dietitian of mine had a 5 pound model of fat. It was gross and disgusting. I often keep in mind that model--I ate too many of my homemade cookies at the end of last year--they were made with butter. I sincerely regretted eating that much fat. It took me 5 months to lose 5 pounds, but I did it and now I'm happy again.

Flutetooter, the thought of 5 pounds of fatty ground meat is gross and disgusting and is the perfect image. Thanks.

Have you ever heard of a garbage disposal, trash or just speaking up to her?
I did the cooking in my home, my husband had Renal disease and I am diabetic. He did some of the grocery shopping and would bring in things I knew we should not have, I am handicapped so I do not get out unless someone takes me out. I gave food to my daughter for her two children (adopted).
If we got any food with High Fructose Corn syrup AKA corn sugar I disposed of it.
It is cheaper to get rid of food then to buy medication to control Diabetes.
I frequently told my husband what I did with the JUNK food, he was a penny pincher so for a couple weeks he would behave, then start back at it. Do not eat foods you should not have, clean JUNk out of the Refrigerator. Good luck.

This was pretty good, but the best one I've ever seen was the 5 lbs of "FAT" Xenical (Orlistat) had in their patient teaching materials they sent to pharmacists/doctors. That was disgusting! Everyone should have one of those around!!
