    jc. the japanese have very few heart attacks but a whole lot of strokes--and stomach cancer which I have read is attributed to their very high salt diets. While I believe some people are just not salt sensitive, it seems better to err on the side of caution and keep track of salt consumption. We do not know from the article if the people who were being watched carefully ate lots of meat,dairy and fat, if they were smokers, if they exercised etc.

    Diabetics are subject to kidney disease which might not show up until the kidneys are in very bad shape. If one is diabetic he should assume he is susceptible to poor kidney function in which case he really should be watching his salt consumption.

    I don't think you can tell from that abstract exactly what was going on in that experiment.

    Japan has one of the highest rates of smoking in the world - that could be the link with their number of strokes.

    So do the Chinese....its encouraged more and more in southeast Asia.

    I don't know if I get enough salt.The only salt I get is that found naturally in beans,rice,potatoes,nuts,and vegatables.

    Yes, they smoke like chimneys. My husband was there on business once and it drove him crazy. However, oddly enough, they also have low rates of lung cancer. A lot lower than you would think from all the smoking,. This has been attributed to their very high vegetable diet. I am not surprised that getting lots of phytochemicals in their diet and eating little meat and fat would be protective. Let's see what happens now that so many have switched to a more western diet.

    You would think if the stroke rate is due to smoking that they would also have high rates of heart disease and bladder cancer.

    jc, I don't know if you are getting enough salt either but I saw a British documentary in which a group of people spent 12 days in a zoo, isolated, eating all raw food and each day that were given one green olive as their salt allowance. On one of the days they were given grilled mackerel to eat which must have contained salt naturally.
