My breakfast every day is an orange and a lowfat granola bar. I like the Quaker Chewy low fat bars. They are only 90 calories, 10 of it fat calories. So, with the orange, it's under 200 calories. But, I eat a really light breakfast. A couple of hours later I have a yogurt.

I like to have hard boiled eggs on hand. I cut them in 1/2, throw out yolk, and put about 1/4 tsp. of red pepper hummus and season w/red pepper or blk. pepper. Like deviled eggs but much lower fat.

Good for breakfast or snack.

I prefer high protein for breakfast.

Those small containers, 1 serving, 2% cottage cheese, add some fruit.

Low-fat yogurt and fresh fruit and 1/3 cup Fiber One (ground flax seed).

Smoothy w/ff milk, add 1 scoop whey protein (this is 20 grams protein!!) add frozen fruit. I cut up, frozen, bananas for the smoothies. I never use ice (too watery).

I love EggBeaters with broccoli and mushrooms and mozzarella. Use the spray oil for cooking.

Ruby, I boil a doz. of eggs a week, Put a bit of salt in boiling water & they peel easily. Got that tip from "Barefoot Contessa". Store in same box & use thru week. This is cheap & handy. Use in wraps w/romaine peppers, celery.

The key is having them ready. And they keep for 2 weeks after boiled.

Good luck.

ps mustad and lowfat mayo and pickles are good, also.

jean4vr,

The yoke is where most of the nutrients are in an egg. Thus, throwing it out does not make much sense. http://www.cholesterol-and-health.com/Egg_Yolk.html

Well it makes sense if you want to reduce your fat intake.

That's why they make "Egg Beaters".

I/we get your point about nutrients. The post asked for low fat/free breakfast ideas.

Do YOU have any ideas about the Inquiry, re: fat free/lowfat breakfasts?

Jean4vr,

A fat free meal makes no sense unless you have some health issues. For that matter, nor does a low fat meal.

Research at the University of Alabama has indicated a breakfast with fat in it is better. "Bagels or Bacon".
http://www.aolhealth.com/2010/03/31/bagels-or-bacon-high-fat-breakfast-may-be-best/

While consuming too much fat can be a problem, so can drasticly cutting your fat, cholesterol and saturated fat intake.

Cholesterol is necessary for estrogen and testosterone production. Dramtaic decreases in fat intake lower estorgen and testosterone production, as well as other hormone functions. Low hormone production creates a cascade of problems.

I could provide some ideas on low fat breakfast items. However, that idea isn't a good one.

There are other alternatives to decreasing calories than by going low fat.

biggestlower90,

4 egg whites is 12 grams of protein, which isn't that much.

Pamela Peeke, MD, MPH, FACP responded:
Hi Ruby and thanks for your posting. Scoring a healthy breakfast that's truly satisfying is so important. Research shows that it's one of the greatest predictors for shedding weight effectively and keeping it off in the long term. What makes one person satisfied may not work for another. Research now shows that some people do better with a low fat regimen and others with a low carb plan. You'll know by experiementing. If you or your family has a tendency toward type two diabetes, then the low carb option is probably more recommended by physicians.

One of the easiest healthy breakfasts is a Greek yogurt which typically contains 16 grams of protein, along with some ground flaxseed (healthy fats), blueberries (thawed or fresh) and a tablespoon of chopped walnuts. Your goal is to eat a breakfast that will stick with you for 3 hours. You'll want to eat every 3-4 hours throughout the day.

Egg white omelette with fresh veggies and a side of 1/2 cup fruit is another option. Heck, running out the door with no time to spare? How about grabbing a whole wheat pitta and putting in 2 slices of low fat cheese and then microwaving for 30 secs for a cheese melt. Grab an apple or pear as well. Finally, that old standby a thick multi grain cracker with some organic peanut butter and a dollup of blueberry preserves.

Good luck, Dr. Peeke
