Juice Fasting (Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead)

puzzlegut posted:
I just watched the documentary Fat Sick and Nearly Dead. The guy in the film fasted by only drinking fruits/vegtables that he juiced in his juicer for 60 days. He claimed that it helped to detox him and get him to jump start a healthy living. I'm curious as to how healthy it would be do a juice fasting for a week, as he generally suggested.

Hi puzzlegut!

Here is a WebMD article on Detox Diets that gives more information on the pros and cons of juice and other fasting techniques.

Hope this helps!

A balanced diet, reducing calorie intake, plus exercise is the proper healthy way to lose weight.

Ask yourself this: "Is this Juice diet a realistic lifestyle I can stick to for the rest of my life?"

If the answer is no, then the weight you lose on the juice diet will be gained back in the end when you get tired of it, and abandon it for real food again.

Talk to any nutritionist (or diabetes specialist). They'll tell you same...

Juicing and throwing away the pulp is like tossing the baby out with the bath water.

Fiber, both soluble in insoluble, is the "scrub brush" that cleanses your internal organs. Fruits and vegetables are to be eaten in it's entirety; not just the "juice", inside.

Don't take my word for it. Simply consider the morphology of the food and ask yourself, WHY?

Never once did they guy say to do it your whole life. Of course you cant do it your whole life. That's why he only did it for 60 days. And people have been fasting for centuries. Back when humans hunted there food, do u think they just ate like kings all winter? No, they had to overeat all summer so that they could last the winter. That is the reason our body doesn't just eliminate what we don't use. It stores it.That's why juice fasting works. It forces your body to use all the stored fat for energy. Not to mention all the countless other benefits for poring liquid nutrients into your body.

The fast is to detoxify your body. I am fasting right now for 60 days to help really clean out my system from all the meds I have received over this past year-for Fibromyalgia and Asthma. I then will revert back to some whole foods and always continue to get all the micro nutrients I need in a day out of my 2 glasses of green juice a day. It is a maintenance plan. Anyone can do this and anyone can stay with it! You fast for a set period of time-meaning only drinking your green juice that has everything you need in it....then when you go back to real food, you have to be smart and watch what you choose to put back in your body. I can tell you from my own experience-I have never felt better in my life! I have NO fibro pain, no asthma problems currently, no lower back pain, no carpal tunnel pain, etc. I am totally energetic every day-very alert! I sleep soooo much better at night. It is the BEST thing I have ever done for my body and soul!!!!!

We do not all throw the pulp away. I use in many different ways-just because I do not consume it during a fast does not mean I am not getting my micro nutrients that I need and my overall body feels better than ever!

conniejuicer, I am so glad to read your testimony about juicing! I am doing an 8 week detox, and I'm on the last day of week 2. It is SO hard for me. I'm still craving so many things. How did you stay strong? How long did it take before you could really notice feeling better?

I think the film was inspirational. I do think though that it would have been better to consume the actual vegetables rather than just the juice. I know I certainly have the room for it...

BigDaddyMatty replied to conniejuicer's response:
You'll detox your body even more thoroughly if you actually eat the vegetables themselves...

Aside from that, the fast is also terribly lacking in protein.

I honestly have to ask if you would be craving anything if your belly was stuffed with fresh vegs all the time?

I am on day #35 of my own diet. Tons of fresh vegs and extremely lean meats (sardines and tuna in water, etc.) and I never feel deprived...
