emotional triggers

Oh, no! I was doing so well. I had lost 25 pounds in a little over two months. Then I hit a great big trigger.... the size of a wall. I saw my ex. I knew I would see him there, and it still bothered me. I behaved perfectly during the two hours we were at the party together. So that's something. Right? And I politely didn't agree to see him in the future, as he hinted at. He's toxic for me. I know that.

The problem is for the next three days I couldn't eat enough. Now I just weighed myself, and I've gained three pounds in three days. Definitely not a good trend. One day off the diet wagon I could forgive, but I shouldn't have indulged for three days. I'm very mad at myself. I was trying to think why it got so out of hand for the extra two days? I think part of it was that I got out of sync with my schedule of drinking 64 ounces of water during the day. Perhaps that has been helping me more than I realized. So I'm going to concentrate on that today. Hopefully, I can get back on track here.

If I was more evolved as a person, I guess I would exercise during an emotional crisis instead of eating. Does anyone else have any suggestions for what to do when you hit those triggers?

I'm sorry you had a setback but don't be too hard on yourself - eating during an emotional crisis is more comforting than exercise! But it's great that you are so in touch with your feelings and you identified the issues. It sounds like you handled the party situation perfectly. Just say "no" to toxic people!

Here are two WebMD articles that might help you get back on track. The article on emotional eating has some great tools to use if you find yourself in a spiral again.

Thank you for reaching out to me. That was very helpful. I've been doing well.... so far today. I feel like if I can just stop the out-of-control eating through midnight, then I'll be okay again.

Oh, I forgot to mention that yesterday I also gave myself a very bad haircut. It was 4 inches below my shoulders, and now it's above my earlobes. Terrible. Oh, well. It grows fast, and I'll have a daily reminder for a couple months not to go THERE again. Ha-ha. At least I'm laughing about it and not crying. That's progress.

Laughing and not crying, not eating out of control: Thursday is a WIN WIN!

Hang in there through the rest of the day - maybe take a fast walk around the block, go buy a new book or magazine you want to dive into and keep busy!

I'm looking forward to watching playoff hockey and American Idol tonight - but told myself only if I take a 30 minute walk!

Well, I ended up losing a half pound for the week. I call that a victory after I had that three-day diet stumble. So I think it's safe to say I've recovered from that "emotional trigger"... for now, and I'll try to learn from the experience.

Oh, and I've had lots of compliments on my stress-induced impromptu haircut. How crazy is that?

So I'm committed to losing three pounds this week. Best wishes to everyone for having a productive week toward reaching your health goals.
